I hear the Trail Gear Rock Assaut front axles aren't the best, but they are stronger than a D44 correct? I think the are strong enough and that I don't need a D60 under me for what I want to do (trails, some creeks, some mud, hunting, not really many rocks up here). Anyone care to disagree?

Honestly doesn't sound like you need a solid axle for that stuff.. but yeah rock assaults can take some abuse.. I'm going diamond when I do it just to stay light. If weight isn't an issue I'd say go with tons for the fact that it wouldn't be much more than a rock assault setup

You are probably correct that I don't need it yet, as I am currently a weekend wheeler during the summer and when I can during school. Currently my rack is about shot and possibly more steering stuff, so the SAS idea came up now instead of post graduation. I would like to be able to wheel it harder once I can afford another rig after I graduate.

With just the 2.7L weight is an issue unfortunately. Is the diamond really much lighter than the rock assault?

I'm in the same boat. I wanna grab a 14 bolt and get started but then I keep going back to just getting a ruff stuff housing.

Never laid hands on a rock assault.. diamond isn't really light, just lighter than a 60..

Supra TT is running a 2.7L He recently added a SC but it doesn't add that much more HP. You WANT unsprung weight to lower the COG. What's gonna bog down an engine isn't really overall weight, but the rotational mass of larger tires.

This is very true, I personally don't see running 14/60 in my future maybe diamond with 9.5 third at most..

This us just me but after trail gear upped their quality i have no shame in running their axles. besides if you're not pushing big rubber the extra ground clearance is a massive bonus. i will have as much ground clearance under a rock assault housing on 35's as my dana 60 on 40's

This is been one of my make complaints after wheeling. My steering fucking sucks. Hopefully a hp44 or hp60 will find it's way under there eventually. That or a TG axle with there link kit.

$400 rack vs. $7000+ sas to drive some forest trails makes perect financial sense.

Add $600 to the rack figure for Alaska, add replacing a front wheel bearing, and for rod ends, add alignment. Looking more like 2k vs 6k (after I sell some ifs).

My plan is to slowly collect all my sas parts until my shit is paid off, or totalled by some idiot driver, whatever happens first

Not a bad plan. I've never had a vehicle with a payment yet, but if I did I wouldn't SAS it until it was paid off.
