3" lift

Have you thought of adopting (me)...?

 

Hey 12 Taco u think I should order it with AAL or 1.5 block for rear? What wks best? Don't have a camper or anything.

 

Wish I could, I'm sure that would b an extra 2 grand

 

Think I'm gonna place order today.

 

Blocks are simple.....They aren't the greatest way to lift a truck, but so long as they aren't more than an inch or so, not a lot of harm.....AAL's will eventually cause leafs to flatten out. I've broke 2 leaf springs in the past with AAL's. Personally, I'd avoid BOTH if the cost of a complete leaf pack is in the budget. Blocks and AAL's are bandaids.

 

From nearly every place I have seen including HS you pay more for the OME shocks and therefore they are generally more expensive.

 

Good point about the rust under the yellow paint. I went with billies due to the longer extended length. I personally don't care if my ride is a little rougher since it's a truck. But people have gone on about how much nicer the ride is with ome. With no extra weight up front I was suggesting ome due to the squishier ride, not because mixing is bad. I mix red bull and vodka all the time and they're different brands.

 

AALs help reinforce the factory packs so they actually help prevent them from flattening out. Blocks actually accelerate this process; but more so blocks over 2" thick. The benefit to an AAL aside from helping to support the factory packs, is their thickness.

EXAMPLE: Where as a 2" block is 2" thick adding to the thickness of the pack, a 2" lift AAL is only about 1/4" thick. The end result with the block is it requires 1.75" more extended length out of the shocks meaning you will fully extend the shocks easier with the blocks vs the AAL. The good thing about the block is that they have no impact on the quality of ride like an AAL does; the AAL slightly increases the spring rate, which isn't a bad thing considering how weak the factory packs are.

 

I'll see how much more it is to add leaf pack if . If it's a lot I'll just do 1 1/2 blocks.

Yeah my tone was off a bit in my initial response, probably came off like a dick after re-reading
I just wanted to provide some insight on the two. As far as the ride goes for me its hard to tell the difference between them. So much of this comes down to ones perception and slight differences in trucks. Compression wise the OMEs might be a bit softer, I know the soft ride ones are. Rebound wise the Bisteins rebound quicker over the OME so that in itself can influence the ride.

 

Now hears my deal with leaf packs. They are typically quite a bit firmer than the factory ones. For some people this is a good thing and can use the extra steel back there, but for a lot of people who always have an empty bed and who primarily use their Tacomas to commute back and forth to work and almost never go offroading, the factory packs are just fine. Toyota basically designed these packs surrounding that population of people simply because that's how the majority of Tacoma owners use these trucks.

In other words if you like the quality of ride as is and don't want it substantially stiffer in the back, maybe avoid replacing the packs.

 

Does anyone know if u can use the stock rear shocks with Dakar springs?

You can, but I would not recommend it. The rear shocks in these trucks are the limiting factor for droop anyways, they basically serve as limit straps. Dakars are thicker so they will fully extend the shock quicker, so that's one thing, but its more the spring rate of the Dakars compared to the factory packs. Due to their spring rate they will extend at a greater force over the factory packs in which case the rebound of the shocks will have a harder time fighting the extension of the packs and so once the shocks hit their limit they will undergo greater impact (run on sentence from hell).

AAL for rear

Is that a good set up or no? Before I place the order.

 

Very common set up that seems to make everyone happy! You should be just fine!
