    Hmmm,
    Please explain,

i read tacobella's 'wishbone post' and the post wasnt really about wishbone suspension specifically but more about ride quality and the type of suspension, and changes made.

The underside of the suspension has drain holes in it. They cause a low howling sound and a few need to be covered. it's like when you blow your mouth over the top of a beer or soda bottle.

I understand what the wishbone part means, I was wondering about 'yup a sight howl' and 'plugged'......i realize maybe he meant a slight howl and apparently the noise from these holes is the howl......first ive heard of it....anybody else notice this howl and where can i get some plugs? cant be that hard

Jason great write up and review!

I have been looking at these for a few years now and the 2017 has really got my attention.

I had the 08 FJC when we first met on the Rubicon that summer of 08 and then sold for a 4thGen 4runner.. After submerging my 4runner in 2011, I went with a 100 series, which has been a great rig all around.

But I have never had a pick up and with all our sports we do as a family (mtn biking, paddle boarding, baseball, hockey, firewood runs...), a 4 door pick up seems like a good fit.

Still for the wheeling aspect, I am leaning toward a short bed vs long bed.

What are your thoughts on short bed vs long bed and what are your thoughts on the 16 vs. 17 TRD Pro.

    Thanks see you in Ouray!

Thanks for the honest review :). I thought the same thing when I heard about the 3.5, I still believe in the old saying "no replacement for displacement" as far as power goes (obviously for NA as it comes stock). I just think the auto manufacturers are getting pounded with emission regulations/specifications that are in turn forcing smaller displacement engines with power higher up and less torque, and it's only going to get worse. I'm also not a fan of open-deck blocks, seem ok for NA but I just don't trust them long-term under boost, which these new engines need with the lower displacement... The 2nd gens with the TRD supercharger seem pretty reliable but I don't know how many have had them for 100k+ miles yet.

Anyone know if it's possible to turn off the atkinson cycle? I'm assuming it's something ECU related since it turns itself on and off "when the power isn't needed". Sorry for thread jack.

I think i successfully made a "build page". Take a look if you're interested. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/louies-build-2016-trd-off-road-double-cab.417631/
This may seem silly, but in regards to gutless, stupid transmission, shooting for 50MPG, etc.... When I first got my truck I left the "instant MPG' screen on. I was obsessed with trying to make the truck go and also keeping the blue bar at least in the 18-20MPG range. The result was a horrible dissatisfaction with the performance of the truck, and I really didn't get great MPG. The best thing I ever did was change that screen. I don't even look at it. I just drive the truck. If I want to go, I hit the gas. Want to go faster? push the gas harder. Want to go really fast? turn on ECT PWR mode and go like hell. The power is there, the truck just really wants to save gas and go slow. It doesn't want to go fast unless you force it. And staring at the MPG screen trying to manipulate the shiftpoints for optimal MPG just causes more frustration and even more of a "gutless feeling". I do think the programming is jacked. Especially in cruise control. Going 65mph on nearly flat ground, my truck wants to stay in 4th when cruise engaged. I press the gas a little (apparently to increase to 65.5 mph) and then let off and the truck shifts to 5th. Same thing to get into 6th. The transmission needs a software update really bad. Anyway... my 2 cents.

With respect you may want to look up the atkinson cycle engine it isnt a electrical thing the engine is physically built differently.

Yes, a true Atkinson engine is built differently, but Toyota only replicates the Atkinson cycle by leaving the intake valve open a little longer then normal when in that cycle. Physically, the engine is the same as an Otto.

I know the way it works is different, but I just assumed since the engine doesn't use it all the time there must be a way to disable the different timing.

Maybe, but there is a lot of logic there, so wouldn't expect anything in the near future. It uses both injectors at same time, so much more complicated to map something. Guess one could simply turn off direct injection, but then there is the emission issue, and what's the effect on the engine, very complicated solution.
