Like I said, it's just semantics at this point. Taking OP's situation in mind and arriving to the best solution for him, I think he would be very unhappy with what many people would consider an under powered engine. Granted it might work for many, pertaining to OP's situation and leaving my own personal bias out of it leads me to the conclusion that he would not be satisfied with a bone stock 3.4L or anything less powerful.

until I hit a massive hill... but that's what 3rd gear is for right? ;)

Yeah I think the manual transmission is the key component here. Gear selection makes or breaks the situation.

I think it's the personal bias that's leading you to your conclusion;)

OP, any pickup truck on the market will work for what you want to do. Tacoma will do it slowly, V8 turbo diesel will do it quickly. If you have a manual tranny you're good to go. Now I'm hungry, time for lunch.

like I said your not going to be winning any races, but when your hauling shit, your not normally in a race. and hauling 2 dirtbikes and riding gear is nothing. I did 90 all the way back from the dunes in cali to phoenix with 3 full size dirtbikes and 3 adults in my 2.7l. when I was young I used to be floored often ;) haha
    that's all flat land though.

Elevation will effect your power. When I managed a convenience store, now and then had people buy Super/high octane because coming from the valley to the mountains, they had less power, thinking the higher grade gas was going to help. It's all about the air, it's much thinner higher up. Try to run an older snowmobile jetted for a high elevation and see how it performs at sea level, gonna burn it up because it will be jetted too lean for the lower elevations thicker/heavier air.

My Honda civic can tow 1000 lbs and hit 100 mph in a straight line. Sure it takes over 15 minutes to get up to speed but who cares?!

I towed this moving from georgia to nebraska and it did fine. But like some say on here you need an f150 to haul those nothing less works

I don't mind if I have to slow down a bit, just not too much. I drove a V6 Chevy S10 with a bike in that back and it seemed to struggle with just that. It could do 80 mph fine on a flat road but once I hit any sort of incline it rapidly dropped to around 65 mph. These hills were just on I-25 and hardly considered mountainous. If I had been in a big climb in the Rockies it prolly would've dropped well below 50 mph. I'm trying to avoid a similar scenario when I buy my truck.

a manual 3.4 v6 will give you the power you need. In my opinion.
you will drop down under 65 on big hills though while towing...
if your wanting to do 80 up hills while towing you better get a v8.... LOL

I was never ever at 40mph towing 2 full size dirtbikes and a pop up camper that weighed 1200 lbs with my manual 4 cylinder.... but I did drive the piss out of it.

I stick by my original post, If you can afford a second gen, go for it. If not, you can always s/c a first gen and get quite a bit more power.

Towed two bikes either on a small trailer or in the bed of my truck plus gear and gas for a few Days with 33s and bumpers and never had any problems.

Of course I'm also not very hard on my truck but cruised along at 65-70 just fine.
