3rd Gen Transmission Fluid level Check

No TSB are published for my truck at this time.

 

The TSBs usually start showing up at the dealer before they get published...

 

I can believe that, just stating that I checked.

 

I hear you, got my front diff tsb from another TW member before the dealer even knew about it!

 

I'm doing this, this weekend. That was going to be my approach as well. Put a quart in and allow any extra to come out when it is in the correct temp range then close it rather than trying to fill while running.

 

Much better approach IMO rather thantrying to fill it while running without burning yourself on the exhaust pipe or melting the fill tube.

 

Do you know or have the link for the shift sequence (I thinks it different than Gen2?) to enter temp check (after installing the jumper) and what is the indication that you get once the truck is in temp check mode? Also, I believe the "D" (drive mode) lights up once at temp, is that correct? Thanks

 

It took me a few attempts to get it into temp check mode. And, as you said the gen 3 models use the "D" indicator on the dash display instead of a "temp check" graphic. It's worth practicing this a few times. My experience - shift first from P to N and wait a few seconds. When doing the shifting from "N->D", do it quickly - don't hesitate in "D". There was another post somewhere (I don't remember where) that suggested going all the way to "S" mode (or 4th gear) seemed to do the trick. In fact, I may have done this by accident anyway as it is easy to pull the shift level left when trying to do this quickly. Perhaps that's the trick. Regardless, after doing "N->D->N->D->N->D->N->P" the shift indicator on the dash changed to a flashing "D" after a second or two and when it came on steady it was in the correct temp range for pulling the plug.

[edit] also - pull the jumper once it's in temp check mode. It will stay there until you shut off the engine.

Yes, I pulled the jumper once in temp check mode (i.e.: the dash display shows "D" even though the tranny is in "P").

 

Just left the dealership. 3 1/2 hrs later they came back and said it was 5 oz low. hopefully this helps the "hard shift" I had with a cold start. I hate dealerships, just thought I'd add that.

 

Just got my truck back. They said they did the software update and my transmission was 2.5 quarts low. Here is a shot from the service ticket. They claim the software update is listed under the OP Codes.

 

OK, so we need someone to confirm the OP codes mean something. Also, wow. 2.5 quarts low is a lot.

 

What software update did they do?

 

They told me there was a transmission software update that they did.

 

I want mine checked too. Sometimes I feel a "thump" when accelerating in stop and go heavy traffic as it shifts or when its downshifting coming to a stop. Took it to Toyota a few weeks ago for my 5k service and the dude basically told me its a closed system transmission (or something like that) and that I would have to pay for them to change the fluid and do a flush. He said "you're gonna have more shifting on this new transmission.....". Other than those issues which don't occur often my transmission has been smooth as silk.

 

I think I'd find another dealer...or do fill it myself.... the fluid does not need to be drained...check the level and add if necessary. It's that easy...!! No need to drain & flush....

 

The op code if for fluid adjustment. There is no update for the V6 at this time. I can double check when I get on a computer though.

 

Geez, is the dealer really lying to Justin85 about updated his tranny sofware? That would be sad.
