    I found more gearaholics!!!

    http://lighterpack.com/r/dqyimt

My original goal was to go Ultra Light, but with my different set ups now, im between 11-15 LB's, which makes me happy. Eventually will buy the zpacks pack and tarptent protrail to the list.

Good design, but the Marines I know who dealt with both say the current USMC pack is a significant upgrade in comfort. I know they're drying up fast on the mil-surp market, so get one soon if you want one. I considered it, as I value durability over lightness, but I ended up going Eberlestock for much more $$.

Good setup. He doesn't list food weight. That BV450 canister can hold about 7-9# of food if you pack it full of dense calories.

Build up your fire, fire off an occasional warning shot, and stay in place until morning. I've seen 2 in my lifetime (one was actively chasing a deer up a ridge, the other was near a survival camp we had set up and there were 2 recent elk kills in the area), and both times a warning shot took care of the problem. The first one was just a shot from a .22 and he broke from that deer and ran the other way.

How is the Uniqlo down jackets? I was going to buy one before just cause it was so cheap. but wasn't sure it would be that warm. I currently use a Patagonia Nano Puff but if the uniqlo down is nice I wouldn't mind having a spare.

For all those that carry a firearm when backpacking, are you guys carrying in CA? and into national parks? I'm not to sure what the rules are for that and I know CA you need a permit or license to carry a conceal weapon. Just curious. Right now I only carry a knife with me but a small 380 in the backcountry would make me feel safer.

I bought it on a whim when I was in China, it was cheap and I needed it for the trip. Fast forward 3 years later and I am still using it. I think the lowest I used it at was just about freezing at San Gorgonio. I use it in conjunction with a base layer, wool mid layer, than the down I was just fine. I wish i got the parka version, a hood would be pretty awesome.

Im sure you're Patagonia nano puff is way better though.. would be a downgrade if you went with the uniqlo. I think i saw someone mention its like 640 fill down.

It would be just for a spare if I go car camping or traveling.

It's just called the USMC pack as far as I know. Back to an external (polymer) frame this time.

    http://www.breachbangclear.com/the-corps-new-ruck-a-review/

Article also calls it the FILBE. Maybe that's the Gen 2 you are referring to. I don't think there's any of these on the surplus market yet though. If you see any, let me know.

A better choice would be a 38 Revolver or 9mm. They about the same size and are more effective. Been carrying a 38 in New Mexico for almost thirty years and yet to be stopped. We are so rural nobody cares if you are carrying open.

I'm in SoCal and I still carry when I go hiking. I keep it in my waist pack where I can grab it quickly. It's not legal considering I have no CCL but if I'm lucky enough to pull my weapon on an incoming predator then I'll shoot and answer questions later. At least I know I'm alive if I get to the point where I'm answering questions.

Here in MT/WY and Yellowstone, Glacier, Tetons the gun rules for the parks are that you can legally possess a gun but you cannot fire it and you cannot bring it into any of the park (federal) buildings. So they're just there for looks and if you're on a solo trip you're sort of screwed if you needed to stop at an information office or use a bathroom. Bear spray on the other hand can be used at any time on anything (or anyone) and can be carried into any building.

It's a great base weight though. Well done. I've got a 6 day this summer from Onion Valley to Mt. Whitney and my goal is to be at 30#. I have to shave 9#, and I'm splitting the weight of a 2 person tent. The evolution has already begun...

You'd need to check your state laws and the state you're going to as far as concealed and open carry goes. Backcountry trips where I don't see other people I open carry a Kimber in .45, if I see anyone I just throw my shirt over it as I walk past.
Best bet is to call each location and directly ask them.

After I saw it up the hill the first thing I thought after "oh f***" was "do I waste one of my 8 shots or not"
