Solid Axle Swap BS Thread

I've been documenting on my camera but managed to snag a few shots on my phone after a day it work on the truck. Waiting for 4wu link bracket kit, that is the biggest thing holding us up now.



Dialing in the triple stick shifters.

 

Who's triple stick setup is that? I asked davezoffroad, but I couldn't get a straight answer if it would work with Tacomas.

 

This one. Works great, I swapped my rear to a j shift case. Not that it matters with your rig but there is almost no cutting necessary to the stock console also, pretty slick.

Is a flap disk the best to clean the frame before welding reinforcement plates?

 

From my experience, no. They get "gummed up" with the paint and grime on the frame. I always use a regular grinding disk to get everything off, then maybe hit it with a flap disk to smooth it out some.

 

If your just cleaning of paint yes, that rubber coating bs Toyota put on a wire wheel is best.

 

Wire wheel seems better, I'll give both a try.

What about repainting it, any recommendations?

 

What's ideal is these abrasive wheels that remove rust and paint, without removing metal.

A simple primer and paint should suffice, or spray-on bedliner like duplicolor.

But you should be able to get them at any hardware store.

 

As far as paint I usually hit the bare stuff with self etching primer then go back and paint with rustoleum.

 

A sawzall cut right behind each motor mount removes the IFS brackets and paint off the frame quite nicely and quickly.

I like the krylon high zinc primer, that stuffs awesome but i can only find it at advance auto.

 

same only i go over that with Duplicolor bed liner because rock tend to chip paint and make it rust anyways.

 

Only reason I don't like using bed liner is because it's a bitch to clean all the mud and dirt of it.

 

Depends on the bedliner. Herculiner would indeed be a PITA. The Duplicolor and Rustoleum spray can stuff has little or no texture at all.

 

I'm a fan of the rustoleum bed line... or rustoleum satin black

 

Is that the spray on stuff or brush on?

 

spray on and the cheaper of the two options it's like 10 bucks a can. i used it down the side of the cab for anti rock chipping and it works fantastic.

 

Yeah I did that to my rockers as well when I bedlined my cab, but I rolled it on. Wasn't sure if the spray on stuff was good enough, sounds like it is.

 

For those who used bedliner, do you have any issue with it fading? I used the HF spray and it was gray in a few months
