So I swapped out my brake calipers yesterday. Bought the beck arnley black ones from rock auto. New ebc yellow stuff pads too. Easy, went smoothly...

Then I noticed some wetness on my skid plate. Thought it was some spilled brake fluid.. Turned out its gear oil. The front diff breather under the hood is wet, and it looks like either the oil was dripping back down the breather tube, or there might be a leak at the clamshell.

I turned on the compressor and engaged the front and rear lockers to see if that would cause oil to leak out. To my surprise, the compressor wouldn't stop running. So I started looking for a leak in the air line. It led me to the rear diff breather, where air was coming out.
I called east coast gear supply and they said that could mean there's a bad seal, or a leak on the copper line, or the diff is over filled. I asked about why gear oil would come out the front breather and he said that sounds like overfilled also.

So I opened the fill plug on the rear diff to check the oil level, and it was way full. I let it drain for close to an hour (thick oil and very cold day) then put the plug back in and tried the compressor and rear locker. Didn't seem to be leaking anymore and the compressor would hold pressure and turn off. So I have no fucking idea how the diff got overfilled. I probably drained about half a quart out of it. Idk if it got water in it somehow (oil wasn't milky though) or if it had something to do with the very cold weather, or if there's a problem that I'm not aware of.

Haven't had a chance to check the front diff oil yet. But tomorrow I'm going to pull my truck into the garage at work and let it warm up for a few hours and then check the gear oil level in the front and rear. I just changed the front diff oil in the last 6 months before I put my skids back on. The rear hasn't been touched since I regeared and changed the oil after 500 miles, and that was over a year ago. Haven't had any issues with the breathers leaking oil or air before this.

I would have to agree with ECGS. Their diagnosis was correct for the rear. I bet the front would be a little overfilled as well.

I've seen a transmission push fuild out of the breather due to overheating -- doubt that's your problem

saturday I let it warm up in the garage at work and checked the oil level in the front and rear diffs. It was at a good level, none drained out when I removed the fill plug. I ended up deciding to change the oil in the rear since it's so easy. It didn't look milky or anything. It was still dripping a little oil when I put the fill plug back in, but it only took 2.5 qts. I'm going to check it again soon to see how it's doing, then try checking on cold days and warm days and see if I can notice any difference.

Been using the truck to drive for Uber a few nights after work.

So far it's a stupid idea. I made $30 last night for 3 hours of driving around. And I used atleast 1/4 of a tank of gas.

I had high ambitions of ubering to pay for sas or long travel.

Yep. I knew the truck sucks on gas, but I figured I'd give it a try. I've never ridden in an uber so i didn't know how much they get paid. So far it's not impressive.

It would be more profitable for sure.

I was thinking about signing up for uber black. Has to be newer, black, and black leather interior. I meet the criteria but the list of suggested vehicles are escalades, bmws, etc. so someone might be unpleasantly surprised to see my truck instead. They charge quite a bit more for it, but I'm sure it's a much smaller clientele also.

Haha, that's awesome. The business consultant our company uses is always trying to tell me to use Uner when I'm in Florida rather than renting a car. I have to say, if I did and your truck showed up, I'd be thrilled.

Good to know about them. Since my dad retired from trucking, he's been saying he is going to be an Uber driver. I'll let him know it's not all it's cracked up to be. Not to mention, he's used to dealing with cargo, not people. I could see him kicking people out of the car midway through the trip.lol

Lol! Yea it runs through the app, so idk if he is smart phone savvy, but if not then he wouldn't be able to do it anyway. I read an article about how much money people make driving for uber, and if you do it full time and drive to busy places, you can do ok. By busy places I mean Hoboken, NYC, that kind of busy. But you could also spend all day driving around using up your data plan waiting for an alert and never get one.

Interesting. Yea. He's not smart phone savy at all. I was just saying to him that in their area, his only real business is going to be drunks on Friday and Saturday nights in the summer.
