99+ 5vzfe MAF plug compatible to 98 earlier?

The 1998 MAF has a fixed diameter housing and I'm looking to use a 1999-2004 MAF as it's a drop in type into the intake tube.
Found that 99 and higher models have a larger intake tube and have more selection to performance intakes.
Anyone did this swap?... as the MAF plugs look identical and seems like a plug and play.
If not, I'll take a gamble at it after Christmas and buy the 99+ performance intake and MAF to see if it's compatible.

It's been buggin me for sometime as I see no physical differences in the molex/connector including the pin placement. I'm actually itchin to do this sometime soon and I'll definitely post up my findings.
Can't see why buying a larger performance intake for a 98 or earlier 5vz and still utilize the fixed housing of the MAF.
