I want to carry 2 kayaks on the roof of my truck. They weigh just shy of 90 pounds. I believe the OEM roof racks are only rated for 75 pounds. Would it be possible to attach Thule, Yakima, or Malone crossbars to the OEM Toyota bars when they are in the stowed position? If so, do you think this would increase the weight capacity?

Usually it's 25lbs per corner so they usually can hold 100lbs. But I'm not sure maybe it's rated less, especially with or without a sunroof, there might be a difference

You can do this with the Yakima RailGrab tower or the Thule CrossRoad 450 Footpack. Then use a 58" or so crossbar. I've done this with my 2015 and it will probably hold more than the "recommended" weight rating but any rack shop or toyota dealer will tell you to stick with the original number. Mine feels strong and I would not hesitate to load it up with quite a bit more than the recommended but I also know I am doing so at my own risk. I say go for it.

Perfect, thanks. I already have a malone system from my Subaru, so I'll give it a go. Just didn't want anything snapping and kayaks flying. How much weight would you guess you had on there?

I wouldn't feel bad about 3-4 whitewater boats. (30-40 lbs each) With that being said, I don't know how much I would trust it at interstate speeds. After all... It is still held on by the "removable" factory crossbars. I'm sure you want to keep your factory rack but Rhino Rack makes a track system that uses the factory mounting points, fits in the ditch and replaces the factory rack. Yakima is also working on a Landing Pad that will bolt directly to your factory rack in the place of the cross bars. (Like the Subaru Outback) but it's not out yet. I hope all this random info helps!

That's a huge help. I don't have the OEM racks. Just weighing all my options. Didn't realize they make racks that will mount into the factory holes. I'll def check it out. I do like that the oem crossbars fold up
