I'm sure some of the forum members have installed a "dash" camera in their vehicles. I really don't want the Go Pro even though the 16' has a mount for that brand. I really am looking for a true dash cam. What brands has anyone used? Did they mount to the bracket on the windshield? One web site lists the Panorama 2s/IIs as a "best buy" unit. Anyone familiar with this brand. Of course other sites list other models as "best buys".

I had a G1W-C in my jeep. It survived a head on highway collision and still works. It will be in my Tacoma once I buy it after the insurance is settled.

I too am rocking the G1W (original model). I'd go for the C model with the capacitor if I did it again since my battery is pretty much shot, but it still works just fine. I've had it for over a year now and I did have to change out the included mount since the plastic broke, but a $6 replacement on Amazon took care of that. So far it's survived one small wreck that wasn't much, but it caught it and has more than been worth it's price of $50. I've used it a lot for Instagram posts of crazy drivers or videos of me driving through stuff in my truck, using it like an action cam of sorts.

It's also fun to see what your truck goes though at the dealer and what all they say and how they drive around the parking lot and service bay if they leave it on.

My buddy has a Auto-Vox and he loves it. I am going to purchase the same unit. You can set it to overwrite continuously so you really don't have to mess with it. If you get into an accident the g-shock sensor will lock the video file for you automatically. I'm sure there are better options out there but I'm going with it.

I know you said you don't want a GoPro, but I was thinking the same way you are before I pulled the trigger. I wanted a dedicated dash cam, and was about to buy the Garmin Dash Cam 20, but then I kept reading mixed reviews. I was totally against buying a GoPro for a dash cam. But I looked a bit deeper and found that a decent amount of people used GoPros as their dash cams. I bought the Hero 4 Black Edition. My reasoning was that it shoots awesome video, it makes for a great dash cam, and I can use it for other things too. Also it's super reliable, unlike a lot of the reviews I was reading about dedicated dash cams, of course that's not to say that they're all bad. I use my GoPro as a dash cam now, I use it on the looping video setting and I record in 1080p 30FPS. It looks awesome, and runs super smooth. I used the adhesive mount that it comes with, and I mount it up next to the rear view mirror. It just clips in. Also I bought the frame housing so I can charge it and record as I drive. Just something to consider

I have Garmin Dash Cam 20's installed in both my Tacoma and my Mustang. I'm very satisfied with the dash cam and it's ease of use.

Does this automatically loop video or do you have to delete whenever the memory card fills?

It loops. From what I recall, the guy who started the brand got fed up with dash cams that paired a good processor with an inferior cmos, lens and buggy firmware. So all of his dash cams merry the best components with a good firmware. He's active on the dash cam forums.

    Here's a good review write up - https://dashcamtalk.com/forum/threads/street-guardian-sg9665gc-deluxe-kit-dashcam-review.15039/

If you get this model i got mine through shop.pier28.com. The reseller is out of California so support and service is easy if you need it.

If you ever park outside, make sure the dash cam you get is small and fits discreetly behind the rear view mirror (or is part of the mirror). A GoPro or any of the larger dash cams with a big lens will be inviting a smash-and-grab.

I would highly recommend the DOD LS360W. I have it and it is fantastic day and night.

GREAT replies to my original post! Other than the GoPro will these other models mentions fit the mounting bracket that is on the 16' windshield?

I was leaning toward the Hero4 Sessions as well but would like to have the LCD monitor. I guess I could get the model with the LCD monitor but they get pretty pricey.

You guys putting GoPros in your windshields are just asking to have the truck broken into. Unless you remove it every time you park which is a pain in the ass.

A G1W-C is a reliable cheap camera if bought from a reputable seller (there are some fakes running shitty software/hardware). I have the Street Guardian SGC9665 and the video quality is phenomenal along with GPS location & speed tracking.

Here is a clip from the Street Guardian
