On the 05+ do you have to remove your skid plates to change your Oil Filter?

If not what do you have?

I think every toyota I have owned I had to remove the front skid plate to get to the Oil Filter and I have owned: '88 22RE 4Runner, '94 3.0v6 4Runner, '98 2.7 Tacoma and '04 4.7v8 4Runner.

The stock, non-TRD skid plate (The silver one that comes up front a bit) has an access hole. Not sure about the TRD ones, or any of the aftermarkets (BUD, ect).

no need to remove the skid, there should be a hole in it where the drain plug is

In my first gen, you unsnap some clips in the driver-side wheel well and pull back some rubber flap to reach the filter.

On my second gen, you access it on top of the engine. Greatest design I have ever seen! And the removable plug to drain the overflow basin around the filter is the 'cherry on top'. I added a fumoto drain valve and can change my oil without a single drop spilling on the driveway.

Like everyone else said, there is a hole to access the drain plug.

I'm sure some other people do this too but I put a plastic SOLO cup underneath the little drain hole on the oil filter housing so that when I remove it I don't have to clean up any oil, then just wipe the remaining residue out of the housing with a paper towel.

I attached a hose permanently to the drain hole under the filter and ran it down through a hole in the skid plate....works great!

The only other truck I had with a top mounted filter was back in 1974 with a Mazda Rotary Pickup.
I just took a screwdriver and punched a hole in the top and oil would drain out before I removed it with no mess.;)
