I have Mobtowns tailgate cap installed and I want to order a new leer topper. Does anyone out there have a similar set up. My concern is the tailgate cap sit lower than the stock plastic cap and would leave a gap when the topper rear door is closed.

    Pics would be great thanks.

I have contacted Mobtown but they are not sure.

    Thanks

I'm assuming it's a camper topper? If so, most have a piece of plastic that extends a good ways below the rear window. My ARE cap covers the difference in height between bed caps and aluminum cap with about half an inch to spare, odds are the Leer will be the same way.

If not, it probably won't be much of a gap and you can fab up something to close it easily enough.

You'll be fine. You may have to replace the rubber seal at the bottom of the tailgate with a wider one that will extend out another half inch or so to get a tight seal, but you'll be fine. Leer (or whoever is selling/installing it) should be able to help you out.

Just installed KB voodoo's cap with a mobtown tailgate reinforcement plate 2 weekends ago..have a Leer topper too. The tailgate cap is only about 1/8" lower than the stock plastic side caps. Since the cap has a piece of rubber that hangs down about 1" from the topper back glass, it covers any gaps. If you're worried about that get these BEFORE you get the topper:

*Note: those are long bed side rails. Make sure you order the right ones for your Tacoma.*

With Voodoo side rail caps and tailgate cap, all three surfaces are almost level to each other.

this pic also looks like it will be easier to seal at the front bulkhead as well. (a tacoma problem from what I read) Can anybody with this setup and a camper top confirm this?

Which Leer model? They have different rear door configurations.

Leer (and all cap mfgs) do not design their caps to sit on modified bedrails. They are designed to sit and seal on stock OEM plastic bedrail caps, and most installers will lay in a different or extra seal across the front to make up for the variance between the front bed top rail and the side rail caps.

Your only real area of concern for fit will be the rear door, depending on model.

This is how a Relentless Tailgate reinforcement plate affects a Leer 100XQ (manufactured in 2008). The 100XR also has a frameless door style, but uses a different bottom edge seal on the door.

I am looking at different option to replace the small seal flap on this so it closes better. Even now, though, I have no leaks caused by this seal.

Something else to consider is that the stock tailgate and cap have a gentle curve to them. The aftermarket shell do not; they have straight glass or aluminum frames. This means you should actually be able to get a better seal using a tailgate cap.

    I ordered a Leer 100XR

My concern is will changing from the stock bed rails lower the top just enough that it looks off from the cab?

I didn't get that from your original post. You seemed focused on the tailgate cap.

I did already point out that you need to retain stock plastic bedrail caps so that the shell will sit and seal properly on the bedsides.
