I use the MSR hubba hubba for my gf and I when we backpack/camp together. It works great! I have plenty of headroom when sitting up and I am 6', 210 lb's. We also fit a small 15 lb dog. The vestibule itself should fit the pack and shoes, but I've only ever put my boots under it.

I use the REI quarter dome 3. Its between 3-4lbs I believe. Fits 2 plus our packs inside. Has 2 vestibules to put your packs under and save the extra room inside for your dog. I will most likely be getting the same tent when it comes time.

I love the copper spur 2

My brother and a share it on our big hikes. Plenty of space. I bet a dog would fit in between us

Sportsman Warehouse carries the Kodiak canvas tents that are great four season tents. Easy set up and the 10x14 is plenty of room.
Moved up to a popup or would still have it.

Well, good news... we got our permit today to do Mt. Whitney! By entering at Onion Valley and doing the 48 mile entry from the west, we got the exit permit out of Whitney without having to do the lottery. Can't wait for August!!!

My Osprey Atmos 65 shipped yesterday and will be here this week. The old Teton 4000 is going on craigslist unless someone in the Phoenix area wants it for cheap. Pack is in perfect condition and is a great starter pack. I used it on the JMT last year for 5 days and it did the job. $25 to the first taker, local pick-up only.

    Congrats on getting your permit!

I'm still struggling to get through to Havasupai. Looks like I may be switching it to Lost Coast if I can get Havasupai.

Seems like you go up towards the Sierras a lot. Have you don't Duck Pass? I was looking at maybe trying to do a weekend trip there and wondering what are the better lakes to stay overnight at around that area.

I finally got through... but end of the year, got a large group headed Oct 15-17. Might extend the stay, but we will see if I can ever get through to them again on the phone LOL

Have you done Rae Lakes Loop? I highly recommend it.

Have not heard of Rae. I'll need to look into it.

Man, I called the 2180 number for Havasupai, it rang for 5min then just went busy. I have a group of 10 that was hoping to go July 1st. I am sure it is prob full now.

48 miles, so yes :) We will be out there for 5 nights / 6 days.

I've only been to the Sierras one other time - last year. However, the amount of research I've done in the past 2 years makes it feel like I know enough about the area to be a damn guide! This will be our second segment of the JMT. If time permitted, we would be doing much more of it at a time but we have dogs and irresponsible teenagers at home who would burn down the place while we were gone.

I hear it's beautiful, and the pictures are phenomenal. It's just north of where we will be joining up with the JMT coming in from Onion Valley.

Where are you headed in October?

Yeah man.. we were trying to shoot for a May date.
Rae lakes loop is something I recommend everyone! I did it CCW the first time and it was amazing. Hopefully find some time this season to go Clockwise. about 4 days. We also bumped into a couple black bears during our hike.

Havasupai falls! Finally got the reservation, but way later in the season than we expected. Can't wait.

but yea, that's by far my favorite meal while backpacking. theres a whole NOLS recipe book that we try and get most of our recipes out of whenever we go. she did NOLS a couple of times up in Norway and that's where she learned about their stuff.

That sounds like a ton of work, but it sounds good. I'm a lazy backpack cook, so I like fast foods.

One of my favorites are these instant refried beans I get in bulk at Winco. They're pre-seasoned with some good spice. Great carbs and protein and makes for a good hot side dish. My wife uses their instant mashed potatoes as her side. I'll mix instant rice with the beans for some "dirty rice" mexican style.

My champion breakfast is some of the flax granola from Sprouts in the bulk section. I add powdered milk and powdered peanut butter to it and it makes the best tasting oatmeal ever. It's already lightly sweetened. Nice and thick, tastes great, and sticks to your ribs for a few hours. I make individual portions of it in foodsaver bags, and just add it to boiling water and let it sit for 5 minutes. It rehydrates super fast. I don't go on any multi-day hikes without this as my primary breakfast.

I've got a few recipes for do-it-yourself Mountain House meals. I dehydrate all of my own veggies, spices, chicken, rice and egg noodles to make some great blends. More food of better quality, no preservatives, and in the ratios I like. I just add bullion, seasoning, and dried green onions for flavor. Mix with as spoon of corn starch for a nice thick sauce. A good alfredo sauce is pretty easy to make, too. Canned parmesan and powdered milk, then put that over noodles and a meat and you're good to go. Homemade stroganoff.

haha yea i used to be a pretty lazy cook on the trail too. i used to just bring a few pasta sides and tuna packets. that recipe really isnt too bad as long as you pre-cut all the veggies at the house and have the spices and stuff pre measured. if i was just going solo though, id most likely revert back to my "sad noodles" as she calls them.
