2010 Tacoma Gas Mileage

When I bought my 2010 TRD Tacoma the dealer filled it up with gas. The sticker said it would average 17 mpg around town. I checked the first tank and it averaged 20 mpg. I thought this might be wrong so I checked the next tank full. I filled it until it cut off each time and the 2nd tank averaged 22.18 mpg. ( 373 miles - 16.815 gallons = 22.18 mpg ) This was a bit of a surprise to me and I was wondering if anyone else is getting this kind of mileage out of their 4.0 V6. I had a 2000 model tundra 3.4 V6 and it got around 17 mpg loaded or empty.

 

Yeah lots of people get that kind of mileage with the auto. They are just trying to cover their asses just in case you actually do get 17 mpg. Congratulations on your 20+ mpg!

 

That sounds good to me. I'm still working on the first tank in my 2010 DC, and I'm wondering what I'm going to get. Hope I can get around that mileage also. My old 2002 DC 4x4 would get from 17.5 up to almost 20 on average, and maybe just a little higher if on a long freeway trip.

 

my best tank was on an all freeway trip, i kept it right at 65 mph and on the two lane sections of the highway, stayed right at the 55 mph speed limit and got 24.5 mpgs (after dividing miles traveled by gallons used on the next fill up). i havent gotten that high since, usually stay between 21 and 23, but it is rare that i see a tank under 20 mpgs these days since i quit tryin to be the fastest one on the highway. i kind of expected this though, after havin an 06 tundra dcab and gettin 18 mpgs drivin like a granny!

I have been getting 20 mpg commuting (mostly highway travel) with my 2010 V6 auto DC Prerunner.

 

That's good news. I'm on my second tank and haven't checked the mileage yet. After the rings seat and the rest of the engine breaks in, mileage usually goes up. I was waiting for about a thousand miles, only 365 so far.

 

i cant remember if its in the manual or i made it up, but i know i did hear it from one of the toyota techs too.. make sure you take it easy on the engine for the first couple of tanks for break in. it was sooo hard, but for the first 1000 miles, i kept it below 65. and then right after i passed 1001, i floored it jus so i could finally see what the v6 could do!

 

mpg was great on my 2010...that is until i put wheels on it.

 

You must have made it up because I have seen no reference to "take it easy" in the manual. It said don't tow for the 1st 500 miles. Lawyer talk. I had a trailer with two motorcycles on it behind mine at 122 miles on the clock. If it's going to break it will break driving slow or using it as a truck IMO. I drove 325 miles that day and 325 miles home the next day without a hiccup other than only getting 16 mpg.

 

The manual asks you to 'avoid hard braking for the first 500 miles' as well. Without the pads seated to the rotors, could cause some hot spots and warping.

 

Well then mine are warped that is what a warranty is for. But having said all that every Toyota truck I have owned since 2000 has had warped rotors at some point in time, Tundra and a Tacoma both warped. I expect this Tacoma to do the same eventually.

 

Gotta love a warranty, one of the reasons I went with a new Tacoma, though I still have a little Automotive Training Center in me.

 

On my third tank of gas and the best I've gottoen so far is 18.2. That's mixed driving and a light foot. I hope it gets progressively better.

 

never owned a 6 but as far as I can see on this forum there are 2 types of people: the ones that drive like grannies and the ones that drives normally. Myself with my 4 cyl get around 21-23 mpg mixed driving, very rarely under 20 mpg, while some others get much higher mpg than I get. Must be the same with the 6. Yes, lot of ppl might be getting over 20 mpg with theirs but they go 60 mph on highway and watch every of their accelerations at the red lights. I guess that normal driving people should actually get about what you do.

Also, outside air temperature has a great impact on fuel consumption, up to 40% from hot summer temp to freezing winter temps.

 

Nah, I like to call it "responsible driving." when i was in school, the only driving i really had to do, other than back and forth to school and work(less than 5 miles) was going home for the holidays or visiting the folks. so on road trips, it was rare for me to be under 75 mph. with that kind of driving, my taco gets 20 mpgs, very respectable by me. now that i am a commuter in the LA area, i realize that in a 30 min/30 mi trip, speeding only yields about 3 mins difference, if that. so i leave the left lane to the passers and keep it at 65-70. that is NOT to say i always drive that slow, i am not afraid to go 80 when i feel like it or have somewhere to be. i jus dont see the need for it right now and the extra 50 miles per tank adds up!

I average around 16. That's all stop and go around town driving though. Averaged around 20 on some trips that had a lot of highway driving involved.

I can't ever resist a good MPG thread

I saw 20mpg regularly the first year for mixed driving. Last summer, I was about 19mpg avg (all stations kept a 10% Ethanol mix through the summer last year for the first time). Now with the weather, the ethanol, and the 265/75/16s, granny driving I can only eek out 17-18mpg mixed.
