If telling yourself that helps you sleep at night, so be it.

These are contradictory statements. Perhaps your confidence is misplaced...

I guess other people have noted shifting 2-3 a bit notchy as well (2nd gens). Our manual is mostly the same as I recall in specs.

    I dug up this thread.

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/how-to-6-speed-manual-transmission-oil-change.287566/

I'm thinking about taking it in for them to top up - or do it myself if they want $. Obviusly being brand new I'll avoid the latter.
Worse thing that happens is no fluid goes in and it overflows.

At least I know it's full.

2-3 is my smoothest gear change. It almost jumps into third with no effort. 1-2 and 2-1 are my temperamental gears. Smooth as silk sometimes and a bit notchy others. Especially when cold.

Exact same experience as @nevadabugle, 3rd gear is the butter gear. 2 especially will not eat its vegetables.

A synchronized manual transmission, especially one that uses something thick like gear oil, would probably shift better when low on oil. Not worse. Any added friction makes the synchronizers work much more effectively.

The shifting will likely improve a little in time when any leftover machining imperfections in the synchronizer rings wears off. This is why companies like Marlin use lapping compound to lightly polish them up before installing into their transmissions. A perfectly mating surface has the most surface area and ability to grab.

I find the manual quite smooth, actually. Driving an auto while offroading is boring as hell. IMO

What do you qualify as rough as hell? I've owned countless manuals, from trucks, to cars, even motorcycles. I have to say my '16 AC TRD Sport 6spd is one of the best I have ever driven. The clutch is light but grabs where you'd WANT it to unlike so many others that grab at the end of the clutch range, the shifting is perfectly weighted and crisp, the throws are just enough that I can lay my arm on my armrest and simply shift by pulling or pushing up or down on the shifter without moving my arm....

I'd venture to say you got a lemon experience, or were having a bad day. I LOVE my 6spd.

I've had my truck since Oct and I agree, the manual is very smooth. Only 2nd to 1st is a little gnarly, but that's with most manuals.

I agree with this. I once bought a used Nissan D21 hardbody with a manual transmission. I thought it had is the most awesome transmission I had ever shifted. It instantly slipped into every gear with no hesitation or resistance. Wow!
I decided to replace the transmission oil. I pulled the drain plug and about a gallon of hot ATF fluid came out in about 1 second. It splashed everywhere. What a mess.
How long would a manual transmission/synchros last with ATF fluid? Sure did shift nice with that stuff in there. It also leaked like a sponge.

The cool thing about having a manual is when the convo is going dead with a girl or friends, "accidentally" downshift and it will liven up the mood lol

The 6 speed trd shift knobs are garbage rattle like crazy especially when it's cold. Never again

Dare I say.. this is fairly "normal" with manuals, in my experience anyway. However, I have driven some that were smooth as butter from 1-2 even when cold... in particular a '15 Jeep JK and a '15 Soob WRX STi.

I think those who bought a 6mt made a great choice. It's all around a great truck and control is always a great thing. I didn't intend to be a jerk when I said "rough as hell". I am unfairly comparing the trd sport 6mt to 3 of the 6 manual cars I owned (Acura rsx, and Honda accord, and mazdaspeed 6). Frankly it's an unfair and ridiculous comparison. Those are cars and have super smooth manuals. My Nissan stanza, 370z and Subaru Legacy gt all had much rougher trannies than the other 3.

The Tacoma is a truck and is rougher than all of my previous 6 manual cars in terms of driveline vibration and shift feel. But like I said it's a truck and probably great for a truck manual. I have no basis for comparison because I never owned any manual truck before. Also the salesman asked me if I wanted to go over some really rough roads. I of course said yes. The sport was crazy bouncy compared to my off road on those roads, of course this wasn't the transmission's fault.

I love manuals and will own another someday in a performance type car. Maybe a mustang gt or wrx in a few years... No way would I buy an auto in those cars!
