didn't run last weekend, but got 16-17 miles in backcountry skiing into (and out) a Forest Service cabin, pulling a pulk made the workout tougher

I had one of the first ones too, pretty good pack- since I don't drink calories anymore, I prefer a bladder over two bottle (I use a single handheld for shorter runs)

had a good long backcountry ski on Saturday; yesterday's run was less good- wind made for cold conditions and blew a bunch of snow around out of the timber w/ lots of postholing- 1.5 hour route took just under 3 hours

I hadn't a run much over 10 miles in the last month and a half; Sunday I did an out and back on Helena Ridge totaling a little over 16 miles. It was a grueling "run", the first couple of miles up to the ridge (and the last couple miles on the way back) were pretty uneventful- snow packed and ice which is all I've been running for the last three months and no problem for the microspikes. Once I hit the ridge the trails degraded- elk have been using the trail and sometime when it was warm potholed the trail up and now with it frozen made for slow, tedious going. Then every time the trail crossed a saddle the wind had blown in 2-3' of snow (we had winds gusting 60 mph the day before). I had snowshoes, but these stretches were only a 100 yards or less and not worth putting shoes on- so I post holed through them. The last mile or so to the end of the ridge was completely blown in and donned the snowshoes for it.

What normally takes me 3-ish hours in the "summer" took a little over 5 hours. I definitely felt it (took Monday and Tuesday off), but solid training and beats running on a treadmill!

I got back from deployment a couple weeks back and have only gotten about three runs in so far, with two of them being on hotel treadmills. The weather has really been killing us here lately! Ugh - can't wait to get back out there!

Welcome back! What's the weather like? I refuse to run inside so have gotten good at running in some pretty crazy weather, snow, rain, wind, etc. I struggle with hot weather more than anything, not looking forward to my upcoming deployment from that standpoint.

I'm the opposite - I'd much rather run in hot weather than in cold. Over the past six months, I was a treadmill rat - we couldn't run outside while deployed - air quality and camp location. So I guess I have gotten kind of spoiled in that regard. I did do a half marathon while out there, but does a treadmill half really count? Haha. I guess it'll just take me a while to get back into the spin of things. For now, I don't mind taking a few weeks off to recoup and re-adjust, but man I can't wait for it to get a bit more mild outside!

I overheat too much, I ran in shorts and a long sleeve tech shirt at lunch today, it was 36 degrees. It's going to be a real struggle for me to run while deployed, I mean I can run in the heat but it really degrades my performance a lot! I can't even fathom running that far on a dreadmill!

Haha the treadmill bit was terrible - after the half, I took a good two weeks off of running b/c I was so sick of going into the gym and spending a few hours on the treadmill every other day doing training. It sucked. There were TVs there, but still sucked. I'm so glad to be back where there's scenery, but the wind chill put us around 10 degrees today, and I'm just a pansy and haven't sucked it up enough to go out there lately in that cold.

Time will tell I guess! Hopefully this bitter wind stops sometime soon.

I could see that, being tired of being in the gym, I hope to avoid it as much as possible, just boring. The more you get out in the cold, the easier it gets, but it still sucks every time at the start of a run when it's that cold.

Looking back I am missing it, when is your 50 miler?

I've had it before. Stretch your IT band out and it will fix the knee pain.
