@Sterdog there will be some variables to the equation. What's the PSI the tire is at? That is the width of the tire? The rim width?

I have a hard time believing that 1/2" difference makes such a significant impact given the variables.

On my old taco, running 15's it was great. I wasn't super stoked on the brand new 16s on the new models but I guess everyone is doing okay with them.

I'm talking about the same PSI either way. I don't think many guys change PSI's on 16 versus 17" rims, everything else held the same. In order to get the 17" to flex as much you'd need to airdown more and lose more safety margin. Right? I'm not being sarcastic here, just double checking my thinking works out for both of us.

As for rim and tire width that's a big factor for sure that adds volume. Again though, if all else is equal other than rim diameter, the 16" has significantly more volume.

Again, not trying to start a debate here. The statement was one in general. A larger rim does have less sidewall and volume, which is not necessarily a good thing if you plan on airing down and offroading.

You'll be fine. Even my 17's are fine. I even know more than a few Jeepers that run 18's and 20's in some places because they aren't really paying attention to function and more to looks.

Exactly. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks so. It's weird that 17" is a standard Offroad size now to some people. Maybe it's just because they run big tires and don't have issues either way.

Seriously it's marginal. I had the 2010 4Runner with 285's on 17's and put several hundred miles on them off highway and they still lasted 55k before I decided to replace them (not even at wear indicator).

Air volume can be computed all day long but these tires can withstand a significant amount of abuse. If you're comparing the damage that can occur on a tire based off of 1/2" rim difference on either side of the rim then I'd say we are in the wrong business. For the everyday off highway enthusiast this is insignificant.

If anyone was that concerned about the rim diameter they'd be running steelies.

Oh and I was originally talking more about contact patch rather than tire safety/integrity. Flex from the extra volume and sidewall. I'm sure you are right though that the difference is fairly small at the end of the day and tire choice probably means more than anything.

    Thanks!

Agreed, that ram truck grill is horrendous, but the letters aren't all that big. I was going more for the "raptor" look since that seems to be the popular preference on TW.

Wish they would hurry up and start selling these. I am due for a new truck, and that cement gray pro is going to be it lol.

I really like the cement color
They can barely keep up with the demand for the TRD OR, won't be until really late this year, or early next year before people get their hands on this I think.

Yeah and I'm not saying 17s are bad or whatever. It's just if your going to have a truck that's purpose is for off roading why not take the advantage of the smaller rim, even if it's marginal.

Trucks nowadays are getting stupid. Whoever the idiot is who decided to make a mt tire for 18-20" rims is well, an idiot. And the bigger idiot is the ones who buys the crap.

Thank Ram for that. I remember my base mode work truck SLT back in 2007 coming with 20" rims. Bling bling.

Some of it I understand cause of fitting brakes and such. But yeah that's a little ridiculous. Then again it's not really that off road oriented either.

Having used 17" rims with 285 BFG AT's I would honestly say rim diameter makes very little difference. I beat the piss out of my 2010 4Runner and have run with people who have had 16" rims and I can tell you, there is no difference.

I don't even know why this is even a topic of discussion.

I'll put it this way. The 4Runner Trail Edition is a far better suited off road machine than any Tacoma from the factory and it comes with 17" rims.

I never said there is a noticable difference. But there is some kind of advantage even though may be very small, why not take it instead of trying to go more for show.

I didn't say 17s were going to be a huge difference. There just isn't much reason for it.

@ForeRunner seems to really have this one close to his heart, or hurt, and given that this is the mods playground at the end of the day I'd let it be. People will read the discussion and take away what they feel from it either way :). What I can't figure out us why a joke and a minor comment tonight, both if which were well liked, ended up drawing this much off topic discussion lol.
