When I bought my truck I passed on the undercoat application from the dealer. After reading alot about the rust issues I'm now thinking it might not be a bad idea. For those that have it, are you happy with it as far as the protection and sound deadening, or has it been more a pain in the ass as far as covering up bolts and area's you need to service?

I got mine done with heavy duty undercoating/soundproofing through my toyota dealership using " the protector " undercoating. Cost me like $270 to do the whole underbody, door jams, engine bay, the works. Made a HUGE difference in sound. Cabin is much quieter especially on the highway. I never had any problems with undercoating and I made it a priority to get it done before my taco saw the first grain of chicago winter salt. I seen the salt eat my moms landcruiser in 1 year. The engine bay looked like that of a 15yr old car. Says alot about toyota metal.

After reading couple of threads about 2nd gen rusting problem. I am worried that by the time I am done paying off my 2010 tacoma 4x4. It will be rusted :( . Is this the problem with tacomas or every other vehicle TOYOTA makes like camry or corolla ?

My taco IIRC had the 'northwest package' which was supposed to be some sort of undercoating but it isn't doing much. My weld beads are starting to show some rust. I'm going to town on it here in a week or two with some rustoleum or POR15, can't decide which (POR is expensive, but rustoleum would def hold through a winter.).

I got my Krown rustproofed and am quite pleased. I'll be getting it done yearly and on every single vehicle I own from now on. ForTech will be a great one to ask if you have any questions, he did a great job on my truck.

I got my 09 rustproofed and undercoated. Comes with a 10 year warranty from local dealer. Also, I can take it back to dealer each year and get a free touch up on undercoating. I look at it like buying cheap insurance for a $30K vehicle. NYS loves putting salt on the roads. Hopefully, I will move back to AZ in a year or two and not have to worry about it anymore.

my 09 trd had the toyoguard package that comes with undercoating. i dont know if they do it at the dealer or factory but it looks like they covered pretty much every thing under the truck. i would definately get it and check it once a month for damage and touch up accordingly.
i haven't seen any rust under my truck yet

Mine was undercoated before it saw the salt last year, and re-done this November.

Some of the excess will still ooze out of the drain holes in the doors and tailgate when it get hot during the summer.

I personally do not see why you wouldn't do this, other than if your state won't let you. The salt mix they use now is far more corrosive than the old stuff. Vehicles don't stand a chance. Just ask the mechanics who have to repair them.

First of all, there are two types of products that are generally refereed to as "undercoating".

    1. Petroleum based rust inhibitors
    2. Petroleum based undercoating (usually a black, rubberized tar mixture)
    * Water based products are also available but not even worth talking about in my opinion (and experience).

You will not want to apply a product such as a rubberized undercoating over even slightly rusted areas. Moisture cannot escapes through the rubberized undercoating thus gets trapped between your frame and the undercoating - eating your frame from the inside out. Although it looks nice and better than rust, I won't put it on any vehicle that was BRAND NEW (ie: rust free) and completely dry. Your frame simply gets eaten from the inside out. When the undercoating peels off in a year or two you'll see what I mean. This isn't so detrimental in the Southern States as it is anywhere snow, salt, and sand is present on the roadways.

Keeping the drain holes in the boxed area of the frame clear of debris and applying some sort of petroleum based rust inhibitor inside the frame rails aids tremendously in slowing rust.

This sounds real interesting. Does any toyota dealer have this?
No salt here in Oregon, but $270 sounds like a cheap bit of insurance.

I had my 2010 done at the local Ziebart shop before it had even a hint of dirt on it. They were thorough and I will visit them each year for touch-up.

My previous truck (a -- GASP! -- Ford) had spent most of its life in the "high-corrosion" environment of the Mississippi Gulf Coast without troubles but two winters in Ohio corroded the chassis severely. I was unable to remove its fuel filter as the lines and fittings were a single, solid, mass of rust.

I am paranoid about corrosion now. I've added a set of step bars/running boards just to keep crap off of the door sills and lower body. I wish Toyota offered a front mud flap for the 2WD trucks.

Salted roads aside, is there a bit of a rust problem on tacomas? Mine is an 08. Or am I just being paranoid from the thread in general? I never had a rust problem on any vehicle, just remember we use gravel not salt in Oregon.

That's the million dollar question at this point... we're waiting to see what becomes of the '05s and '06s.
