I'm creating this thread because of the lack of information, disinformation and folklore surrounding the feasibility of an American buying a Tacoma in the Great White North and taking it back to the USA. I want this thread to be contain first-hand narratives of attempts, successful or not, to bring a "Canadian model" back to the USA.

I am of course interested in the 2016 TRD Off-Road Access Cab manual transmission model, which is available only in Canada.

That seems crazy that the US market does not offer that model. Like insane. Go to Canada and get your truck bro that's ridiculous.

I live in Northern Maine and purchased a 2016 TRD Sport Last week in Canada with no problems at all. From what I was told by my salesman the sale has to be approved by Toyota Canada and depends on geographical location. You have to live 100 miles or more from the nearest U.S. dealer which I do. The process is simple. At 32% discount on the currency exchange rate saved some $$$. All you need is a letter of conformity from Toyota which states that the vehicle meets DOT and EPs standards which is no big deal. The dealer puts in the request to Toyota and within 2 to 3 business days the dealer receives the letter. On the day you pick up your vehicle the salesman and you drive over to Canadian Border Services so the dealer can have a form stamped by them to prove the vehicle is being sold/exported to the U.S. which is the reason you don't have to pay any Canadian Taxes. Then you drive to U.S. Customs and present your bill of sale with the letter of conformity and do a vehicle import which takes about 15 minuets and costs nothing. Then your on your way. Then at time of registration you pay your states tax which in Maine is 5.5%. That's it painless. A few weeks ago I was in southern Maine shopping for a 2016 Taco and went to 3 different dealers, best price I could find on a SR5 Double Cab v6 base package was $34500 out the door including Maine tax. I also prices a 2012 taco double cad TRD sport with 45,000 miles for $29500 out the door. Then I found out about purchasing in Canada and looked into it. I have a dealer approx 10 minuets from my house so I crossed the border. I bought a 2016 Taco Double cab LB 4x4 TRD Sport-Silver Mist out the door for $30661 U.S. funds. With Maine tax it will end up costing me $32500 total. Big savings. Other thing I was impressed with was that in Canada the vehicle came with towing package, summer and winter floor mats, door sill protectors, receiver hitch and mud flaps all standard equipment. This thing is loaded, heated seats, navigation, premium audio. Oh and warranty is covered on both sides of the border. Guess there is a benefit of living in the great white North. :)

Ok, can you break this down for us? That's a lot of information in one paragraph. i won't lie, I'm perplexed what someone in the U.S. can't get a TRD OR AC with a 6 speed manual.

In Canada you can get a manual transmission in either double cab short box, or access cab, which is obviously only in the long box.

We cannot get a double cab short box in automatic.

As far as your thread goes, A good friend of mine is the sales manager at a Toyota store, in Vernon British Columbia, if you're on the west coast it's not far across the usa/Canada border.

Where are the ones in Canada made? U.S. or Japan? I would supposed only the speedometer is different (kilometers vs miles)?

Canadian tacos are made in Texas or mexico...just like the U.S.
The speedo will have km's as large print on top, and mph in small underneath that. You will also get daytime running lights on a canadian vehicle, and it will be better at hockey.

Mine was made in Texas, yes the large dial is in Kilometers but you can change the driver info one to miles per hour and also you fuel consumption can be switched to mpg.

Currently for 2016 all Tacomas destined for Canada are made in Texas, though that can change obviously.

:mad::mad::mad:Well ran into a snag today when i went to register my truck. Clerk is asking me for a Certificate of Origin, apparently the State of Maine won't issue a title unless i have this. I call my dealer in Canada and he has no idea what a certificate of origin is. This should be an interesting resolve.

You also get the Homelink, which for some reason isn't included in the Trucks unless you get the Limited.

I'm guessing this may refer to the New Vehicle Information Statement form. (Toyota Form VH0003.6)
It says it's a registration certificate and I've received one from the dealership for both new Toyotas I purchased in Canada.

It has information about the vehicle, dealership and purchaser's info.

    It also says:

"I, The undersigned authorized representative of the company, firm or corporation named below, hereby certify that the new vehicle herein described is assigned on this date for registration to the purchaser named below and certify that the vehicle is new and has not been registered previously."

This sounds like what you might need.

I'd post a copy of it but it has too much personal info I'd need to vet first.

    Good luck!

Yea your talking about the NVIS for which Maine does not recognize as a certificate of origin which is BullS!#$ even if it has all the same info. I went back to the Dealer awhile ago and we both went to the DMV in Canada. The salesman was able to get a certificate of ownership/registration issued to the dealership then inturn signed it over to me. Now will wait to see if Maine will honor it.

you'll be fine. Toyota can give it to you. and almost certainly your door panel sticker says 'make in the USA' that'll do it

It's a form letter says where the goods were made and the shipper signs it.
any cross border broker has them, you could likely get one on line too.
