I thought I would love what I do and most of the time still enjoy it...it's a decent job at a decent place but, if I had it to do all over again, I think I'd pick a different career.

Welding is a great trade to get into so I hear. I almost considered underwater welder, but based on the inherent risks of that, on top of the endless days you spend getting certified/ graduating, etc. I ultimately turned away from it.

My welding teacher made a pretty good living from it, welded for 40 years and then retired, always had a paycheck every 2 weeks except when they went on strike for better wages, now he's retired and teaches for fun.

I don't know much about underwater welding, it sounds interesting but I'll be perfectly happy with doing structural welding on new ships.

Sweet! Very familiar with that- used to be in myself. Back then, my benefits were much less.

    Do it!

Being single with no kids & no mortgage. My goal every year is to either pay a little or receive a small refund (under $300 either way). While it's nice to get a big refund and I can understand why many families look forward to it. I don't want to give the government a free loan for the year. I do this by continually adjusting my W9 and my 401K contributions. I'm lucky enough to receive a nice annual bonus as well and that's taxed at close to 50%. So far it's still working out well. This year I had to pay $8 to Maine and I'm receiving a $139 refund from the Feds.

I would not mind that either. Welding is definitely a good trade to get into. One of the locals in my area Jerry at BAMF actually started welding and started up his small business from his home if I remember correctly. He eventually expanded out to a small shop in Benicia and in time he moved into an even bigger shop and his business is booming now. I think it is safe to say that he is well off. Works a lot and I'm sure has to deal with a lot of paperwork on the business side, but he nevertheless enjoys what he does and his design and work reflects that.

Hey it's better than nothing right?!

I would feel absolutely blessed if I had to pay less than $300 every year, but the reality of it is that they dropped trou on me and just stuck it right in dry. While they taped my mouth shut so I couldn't yell for help.

I used to claim zero, but then I started claiming myself as a dependent. I'm starting to wonder if I should switch back to zero.
