305/70/17 MT/R w/ Kevlar

Bought some new tires and decided to go a little bigger. I have trimmed quite a bit as you can see, the only place it rubs now is the body mount (which will be taken care of soon). I had to mount the tires white wall out due to the design of the tire. It will be blacked out soon.

Just out of curiosity. What size lift are you running? I am about to buy some new shoes for mine.

 

I guess i could have mentioned that. Im on a 3" lift. I have 5100's all around and the 885 coils up front.

Stock UCA's? I really like how those look. I was gonna do 285's but that looks great!!! I had talked a guy down to $598 shipped for 4 of the Firestone Destination A/T's in 285/70/17 but those look great!!!! Would be perfect with a nice set of Bushwackers

Ahhhh, you suck..... I was just about to write those tires off and just wear out my KM2's. Now I see pics of the exact size I was going to run.

Ok so now a couple of questions.

What width of wheel are they mounted on and do you know the backspacing?

Was the power noticeably changed? I ran a set of 315/75R16's for a week and around town the power was fine, but the automatic tranny did not like to stay in 5th gear at anything over 70mph.

 

lol, i was following your posts on TTORA with your 35's.....

the wheels are 17x9, and the backspacing is 4.5. As far as the power goes, I came from a set of 285/70's and to tell you the truth i notice no difference. I was running on the freeway at 65 mph in 5th at 1500-2000 rpm varying.

although i notice no difference, my truck was running better than normal from before due to the intake/header/y-pipe/exhaust and a tune, so that may be why i dont notice much now.

 

Thanks. I guess I can tell the wife I changed my mind again then. Was going to wear out the KM2's and go with BFG A/T's strictly for the winter commute when I don't want to be in a dropped Bimmer and icy roads with semi's. I can deal with new anything tires though. But the good thing is that she loves the old MT/R and has no problem with me trying out the new ones. So she says until it is time to pay for them! LOL

Your wheels have the same specs as mine so there shouldn't be an issue fitting then. Would you mind taking a quick measure of the tire to see what height they sit at mounted on the truck.

Also what do you mean by tune? Tune-up or tune in? What do you use? I have the DTLT headers and Borla exhaust, do you think a intake and y-pipe would help much or just make it so that I need to get more URD parts to tune it all.

Well im glad i can be an influence on your truck, as yours has always been inspiration to save save save to make a white one of yours.

the tire measures exactly 34" tall. i put a piece of cardboard on the tire to get that.

What i meant by "tune" is I have the URD MAF calibrator and when i had my 33's with the DTLT's, trdcai, URD y-pipe, and TRD exhaust, I took it to a shop to have them tune the A/F ratio and all. got it dyno'd too.

In all honesty, the intake is more of a sound preference to me, although im sure it helps with the additional air im putting out with all the exhaust. The y-pipe....... ill put it this way, If you want more power down low, dont get one. you lose some backpressure since you are deleting the cats and therefore lose some low end torque.... it does however help you on the top end power, and its run under the crossmember which would be nice for you since you wheel a lot.

With the amount i have spent on exhaust and all, i think it would have been better to just save a bit more and get the s/c..... THEN eventually get all the rest.

 

Thanks man... That is awesome that the tires are actually as tall as they say they are. But that does make me wonder about power, cause the 315's I had on only measured 33 1/2" tall. But were really wide. I want to do a snorkel, so I will go that route on the intake, but thanks for the info on the y-pipe. Might have to just get the Doug Thorley pipe bomb so keep the back pressure but move the pipe up, or have a custom one made and keep the factory cats. And yes, gears and a s/c are a must before I get buried with this truck. Although I did everything to the last one and sold it to get this one....needed four doors....LOL.

Do you think I could already benefit from the MAF calibrator just with what I have now? What does it cost down there to have a competent shop do a tune with dyno, speaking of which, what you get?

If i were you i would just get one made and use your factory cats..... way cheaper. As for the MAF, yes you could benefit from it with what you have. I think URD has a dyno sheet proving a gain of 10-15 hp with just the MAF on a stock truck.

Now, the MAF is only a couple hundred dollars, and will do your basic tuning. If I PERSONALLY were to do it again though, i would have bought the APR x-1. it is definately more costly but much more advanced and tunable. URD sells both units.

The dyno shop i took it to was DynoComp..... they actually gave me an awesome deal because i had to wait for an hour after my scheduled appointment. I paid $80 for a tune and 30 minutes on the dyno. I think usual rates through them is $100 for 30 min dyno time and whatever extra they charge for the tuning.

 

Looking good man! I can just imagine the amount of trimming you had to do. With my 33's its a tight fit and I had to trim quite a bit, and still need to do more.

yea, it was quite a bit of trimming. ill get some pics of the trimming i did. not the cleanest ever but it suits me. I just REALLY need to get the body mount chopped.
