You expected to pay nothing all year and get back what you put in or nearly all of it ?

Well, your first post sure made it sound like you expected nearly all of it back. And what I meant was you expected to pay nothing for the entire tax year?

 

As usual me being single and no dependents I get screwed. I work full time and own a business as well. So I get punished for wanting to thrive. But on the other side of the tracks these pieces of shits that live in public housing, get free food, and free insurance only made about 7k last year. They are getting 12k back.

 

Don't get me started on taxes. Own a business in FL? Own tools/equipment used to run that business? Own more than $25K worth of tools and equipment?

Gotta pay TPP (tangible personal property) tax to the dept. of revenue on those tools/equipment.

Gotta pay taxes to the state, FOR....STUFF....YOU....OWN.

I asked you if you expected to get back nearly all your money you paid in for the year and pay nothing or next to nothing for the tax year. Perhaps you could have been more clear in your first message because I was about to put you in the bucket of freeloaders in this country.

I seem to owe a pretty big bill this year as my caculations were off a bit, being it was my wife's first full year back at work. My situation is basic; 2 dependants, home owner, 401k, HSA some other small deduction and credits. I did a prelim run at it via Turbotax, and its calculated i owe $3.3k. My question is: would it be worth it to see a tax pro to see if I could cut the bill some? I figure i'm going to owe anyhow. Turbotax has always seemed to do the best job for me through the years, and ive never had reason to see a pro, but this stiff one sucks. If a pro can't really make a difference and the numbers will be more or less the same including the prep fee, ill continue the Turbotax route.

Yes!!!! See a pro. I did turbo tax last year and it said I owed 2k. Had a pro do and I had to pay $700.

 

Its free to go talk to someone. Try to find a buddy that has a friend or has been with someone for a while. They are trying to earn your business not the other way around.
With rates being so low its hard for me to find a reason to take anything but the standard deduction.

 

Regardless of whether you choose to see a pro, max out that HSA if you have the means! It's yours to keep and you'll use it eventually. Same with the 401K of course. These things really help to reduce your taxable income.

 

I appreciate the insight guys. What screwed me over this year was not being able to claim my mortgage interest and my company depositing into my HSA. I failed to see that my wifes and I dual income put us just over the max to get any benefit for mortage insurance. The key to next year and beyond is to reduce AGI, and paying myself more via 401 or HSA is the best route. I also think I might refinance my mortgage to eliminate insurance since its no benefit to me now, and also since interest rates are still very near what I got in for.

 

Pmi insurance? Yes refinance as long as you plan on staying long enough to recoup the cost of the refi and you can remove the pmi. I refinanced last year from a 30yr to a 15yr from 4.5% to 3.25%. It only increased my mortgage by $100 and i dont recall the interest saving. By the time my first born goes to college the house will be paid off.

If you have a mortgage your bank will not let kick your homeowners.

 

Yup, I'd like to try and eliminate my PMI since I can't get any more tax credit on it. I got in at 3.5% and I want to stay at or about that rate if I could, just as long as I eliminate the PMI...15yr would be optimal.
