    1. The current price of fuel is totally irrelevant here.
    2. I would be thrilled to get the EPA estimate on the window sticker.

The way to look at it is if mpgs arnt great and power isnt great, just means more modds to add to the lifelong list. Like intakes chargers etc.

V8 doesn't have to work as hard(on average). Equals better mileage. V6, with all the mods I've made, add weight and drag. Equals crappy mileage.

I'm not sure how accurate the trip computer is but mine regularly says 16mpg on my way to and back from work. I basically take a 2 lane highway about 5 miles at 60mph and then the interstate for 10 miles at 70mph.

I am not a lead foot and just set cruise control and the trip computer still says 16-17 mph.

I'm pretty disappointed with this and wish we had just gotten the 4.0 out of the 4Runner if the Atkinson and extra injectors wern't going to make any difference.

I have a 2003 double-cab, and I get 19 MPG driving around town and 20-21 MPG when I'm on the highway, which is almost exactly what my wife's 2007 V6 Honda Pilot gets. Granted, I'm entirely stock and I don't drive like I'm on fire. I guess we'll see what happens when I get my lift kit and KO2s on.

My V6 gets nearly as many MPG as my 2005 MINI Cooper gets so I'm quite happy with that, given the engine is nearly twice the size, the truck weighs nearly twice as much and my foot is just as heavy.

    To answer the op question.

It's because you have a small displacement engine working it's ass off trying to push this trunk down the road. I also find that with the giant grill it's not very aerodynamic.

With my 4.0, I could do my normal drives while never going over 2000 RPM if I wanted to. It'd be a little grandpa-ish, but doable. Driving it how I normally do I don't really go above 3000, and that's with a bit of a lead foot.

Slow highway driving (55-60) I once saw 23.9 MPG. I can't complain about that.

Good news is that the new 3.5 V6 will get 24 mpg at 65 mph on the freeway. I've done it twice. Bad news is the vibration at 2200 rpm that toyota can't seem to figure out.

Depends on the truck. Mine does 13-15mpg on the freeway, and no vibration.

My actual mileage hand calculated, not going off the dashboard, is averaging about 18.4mpg with lots of mixed driving, lots of idle time in the cold weather, and this is after 5,000mi. I'm not disappointed in that number.

Some GM's can pull off better mileage with their active fuel management and displacement on demand, however I wouldn't want that technology. I've seen issues with the GM AFM engines burning oil. 4 cylinders have electronically activated hydraulic lifters that can essentially shut off air/fuel from going into those engines. Those lifters have had issues with aerating the oil causing it to go right through the PCV and burning. A lot of people I know will electronically disable the AFM system to prevent this from happening.

Then I'm sure someone is saying "But dude Ford gets similar or better fuel mileage out of ecoboost trucks and those are even bigger and heavier!!"

Eh, maybe they do. Maybe they don't. Personally, if I was overly concerned about fuel mileage, I probably would have bought a Rav4 and just hooked up a trailer when something larger needed to be moved.

good god thats awful. I have driven copious amounts of ecoboosts of all varying years and mileage. They're peppy, and probably mod friendly to a point, but meh. It just didn't do it for me. I haven't tried towing with them. My Tacoma pulled a uhaul car trailer with a kia spectra on it fairly well although I would have preferred less tongue weight. With uhaul car trailers, if you use their tie downs, the car has to be as forward as possible on the trailer.

Just an FYI, if you (anyone) are basing anything off of the computer display besides tank average after running most of the tank, your numbers are literally useless. Even the tank average display is only a rough jab. Use hand calcs before making any comparison/complaining. The trip average and instantaneous readout are about as useful as the words "big" and "small" for comparison. There are numbers there for your viewing pleasure, but they are not based on actual fuel usage per mile.
