Not sure how you are even trying to compute how big the tank is...you can't see how much gas I have left. all you can see is how many more miles I can go til empty.

For all you know, I have 1/4 tank left, or 3/4 of a rank left. Those numbers don't give any method of computing tank size.

10.3L/100km on my last tank, Frontier Pro4x 6spd 4.0L. I dont know of any gas v8 that can match that average around here, most use nearly 2x that amount.

Of course that's above average, normally I'm getting 12.5L/100km on my commute which is short trips with steep hills and traffic lights.

as many people like to claim their "city" mileage, my driving IS actually city. The shop is 1.6 miles from my place. 14 traffic lights. Takes 15-20 minutes through traffic and the lights. People here claiming "city" mileage drive 20 miles and stop once.

With full size trucks getting up to 21/28 there's no reason we shouldn't be getting over 30 on the highway....except the market for full size trucks is stronger and thus more competition and thus thus better products.

You are getting more MPG tech in full size trucks. You pay a premium in full size trucks to get pretty good MPG for a big truck. GM does offer high MPG in their Duramax, but you'll probably spend around $45k to get it. Compromises are a bitch.

    45k won't touch a diesel. That will
Buy a 1/2 ton with a couple options, or a loaded Colorado

You should be happy if you're getting at least 18 mpg using hand calculations. That's how much my 2006 Tundra gets when I try so hard just to save gas, otherwise I average 16mpg. Keep in mind that the '16 Tacoma has a Drag Coefficient of .368, to get some other ideas, the previous generation Prius had a .27 Drag Coefficient. If anything, the only thing that matters is that the Tacoma can still beat the Colorado, even with the Colorado having better EPA numbers. But don't be fooled, When TFL took both the '15 Canyon and recently the New Tacoma up the Ike Gauntlet, the Colorado averaged 3.9 mpg vs the Tacoma's 4.5. Both towing the same weight.

Considering no one pays sticker for a full size and you can get around 8-10k off, you can get a diesel for 45k

$20,000 off a diesel isn't unheard of where I live.

When I purchased this truck I was well aware of the mediocre fuel economy. I decided on the Tacoma because of the incredible reliability of these vehicles.

I don't think you've ever had a V8 truck. 14 MPGs is good for a V8 truck. I get close to 20 in my Taco and averaged 13 in my Ram 1500 with the 5.7 hemi.

I can't comment about 3rd gens. But at the time I bought my 07 there was very little difference between performance between my Taco and a 1/2 ton. I traded in a 2002 F-150 rated to tow 6800 lbs. It got about 13 mpg city and 17 hwy. My Tacoma is rated to tow 6500 lbs and I've been averaging about 17mpg city and 20 hwy.
While that fuel mileage doesn't seem huge it does add up over time. During most of the 9 years I've owned the truck gas averaged about $3/gal. In the 162,000 miles I've driven it I figure I've saved $6000-$8000 in gas.

Since that time some 1/2 tons now advertise towing 10,000 lbs +, and some claim 22-24 mpg. Trust me, that ain't in the same truck. The ones that tow 10,000 lbs suck gas, the ones that get 24 mpg can't keep up with a Tacoma they are so under powered. In the real world Tacomas get better fuel mileage. than 1/2 tons.

My 2012 ram crew cab with 4x4 and 3.55 rear end gets 20 mpg on the highway at 65-70 mph. I have friends with the 4.0l second gen trd sport (dclb) 4x4, they see 20-22 mpg driving on the same trip, sometimes either in front or behind me. Done this many times. A 2007-2013 GM 5.3 gets better than both. Same crew cab 4x4 configuration. Just my experience. If you get 14 mpg on the highway with your newer v8 you must be going 90mph. And these full size trucks can tow 10,000 lbs.

Now around town I'm sure the Tacoma gets better, but I have not compared these numbers as I don't care to.
