I've had a lot of leveractions from 32-20 to 45-70. For ease of shooting, factory ammo, and reloading a 30-30 is hard to beat. They are just as deadly now as they were 100 years ago.

My "dog walking" gun was a 45-70 guide gun. When loaded for bear, it packed a wallop at both ends. I've shot deer with it at 100 yards, but really there are better guns if deer hunting is it's main usage. It is fun to shoot with factory ballistics, but a beast loaded as hot as possible.

A 92 in 44mag, 45colt, or 454 is a decent gun, more suited for short range work. Pigs, black bear, hogs, mnt lions hunted with dogs are ideal for the 92s.

A 32special or 35 Remington works great for deer and black bear as well if you just want something a bit different. If you are going to reload, the 308 and 338 Marlin rounds are great, but don't plan on finding factory ammo for them. The 444 works almost as well as the 45-70, but really needs reloaded for full potential.

Again though, it's hard to beat a classic 94 or 336 in 30-30 for all around use. As far as ease of reloading, one is as easy as the other. There is nothing special about loading any of them. Whatever you get you will probably want to reload anyway just to use better bullets than what you can find in factory loads.

As far as something to put a lot of rounds down range with, a 22lr, 218bee, 25-20, or 32-20 are cheap to shoot and lots of fun. I'm currently looking for a decent 25-35 for deer hunting but am not willing to pay the prices I've seen.

Pretty much the only lever I haven't shot is a 450 marlin. I just never saw the need or use for it over a 45-70.

Another thing on the levers, put a decent set of sights on them. I really like a tang sight, but not for heavy kickers. Anything above a 30-30 I'd go with a good receiver sight. Williams are the standard, but XS and Skinner make some really nice sights for something different.

I'm leaning towards the .44m more each day. I just got told I should be looking at a promotion soon. If i get it, I'll get the .44m and the 45-70, too. All my open sight rifles and pistols have the factory sights. I've never really looked at aftermarket sights.

The 92s are just fun to shoot. The 45-70s are great, but not what you would put a lot of rounds through just for fun. My guide gun was for bear protection. Most people would not shoot more than 2 full power loads through it.

If you plan to shoot a lot, get the 92.

No bears around here. There's were some sightings last year in the surrounding counties, but they aren't much bigger than a dog.

Anyone own a Springfield XD-S Single Stack? I'm looking into the 3.3" .40.

I've got the double stack .45acp and love it. I like it better than my fanboy Glock 22 in .40.

Sweet! Is it a Springfield? SN range?

This is me shooting my '44 Springfield last summer - you can see the last shell casing ejecting to the front and the en bloc to the rear.

I had the XDs45, replaced it with a Shield 9.

40 is snappy enough in a full size, I'd hate to see how it does in a single stack subcompact.

I don't know how it does in the XDS but in the shield the .40 is very manageable, feels very similar to the XDS 9.
