3rd Gen Tacoma TRD Pro in Chicago

Don't let the dealer fluff you on a personal factory order for you. That's not how Toyota operates with the Tacoma. It's all based on allotments and dealers have some play in the system which also depends on the size of the dealership network. The point is, they might fluff you with pretending to give you this awesome let's place a personal order for you and make you think everything is coming exactly that way from the factory. Transmission option, packages, and color will be factory, but your D-rings, rack, etc will be dealer added, then you'll be told your vehicle has been delivered and ready to pick up.

I'll be getting mine a year from now since I have a lease. I will be calling a couple of dealers to see what the time frame is. Once I have the time frame, I go through a broker to make the purchase. I technically don't have to go to the dealership because they deliver the vehicle to my work/home to test drive and sign papers on the spot, but I prefer to pick up myself because I don't want anyone putting more miles than it has to.

Funny how everyone at this site loves to criticize the lead engineer for the Tacoma and say he has no idea what he's doing, yet you all seem to love the truck he designed more than any other truck on the market, so obviously he is doing something right.

I think they have realize that a younger crowd is buying these and FOX is recognize by the younger crowd as a top brand

Armchair engineers/designers. Ideas are easy; implementation is the hard part. Sitting behind a keyboard and saying someone else should do something is the easiest.

 

Was at my dealer yesterday trying to order one of these.
I was put on this list but they wouldn't take a deposit until they got pricing from Toyota. I should be the first one in my town to get one.
The salesman I was talking to was a young guy, seemed fairly bright, but he insisted that the Cement color will be a Cement Pearl. Even said he had a buddy at the Chicago auto show that was there when these debuted last week. The truck in the videos from the show doesn't look like a Pearl color to me.
I'm thinking he's probably just mistaken about this but has anyone else heard about the Cement being a Pearl color?

 

I was wondering if it was because the infamous TRD Pro clunk issue found on the TRD Pro models (at least the 4Runner). Anyhow... probably some of the above as well as they admitadly stated in the debut video they're marketing demographic is a "younger, more affluent, and educated" buyer... whatever that is... haha

 

I think what they're saying is that they are actively marketing to guys who are, well, younger, more affluent, and better educated than truck buyers have been in the past, even the recent past. It's a pretty obvious demographic to both identify and target​

No, I didn't tout the Miller cycle as a viable alternative, so why would I do the research in an attempt to support the idea?

The Miller cycle engine was an interesting concept in the late 1950's when engines used carburetors, mechanical ignition distributors and breaker point ignitions. Modern CPU electronic fuel injection, digital high energy ignition systems easily match performance the antiquated Miller cycle engine, get better mileage and cost much less to produce and operate.

A perfect example of this is the late 90's Mazda Millenia that used the Miller cycle concept. It had a Miller cycle supercharged 2.3 liter V6 that produced a whopping 210 HP and averaged just 24 MPG in a sedan. That's not very impressive.

It was extremely expensive to produce and doesn't make sense today.
The Miller cycle is not relevant and every engine manufacturer in the world knows this. It seems to me that you believe that because it uses a supercharger, the boost could just be bumped up enough to make an extra 100 or so HP. Well, yes, it could be if the engine was redesigned to operated as a normal Otto cycle first. But then it's just a supercharged engine with none of the "benefits" of a Miller cycle engine.

 

The Miller cycle engine is literally a supercharged Atkinson cycle engine. You said supercharging the Tacoma would cause it to "backfire through the intake."

Now that you know something about Miller cycle engines, please explain why you can't supercharge the 2GR-FKS.

 

I went and saw the TRD pro at the auto show today. It looked better in person than on the Internet. I got there early in the day and was able to talk with a Toyota rep. He confirmed that they would all have the TRD exhaust standard but didn't know about the intake. They had a Tacoma TRD exhaust on display as one of the upgrades for the TRD pro. I asked about homelink and he looked it up and said it would be on both the automatic and manual pros. Asked about the JBL and wether it would have the speakers and sub and he said he didn't know and it wasn't in the docs yet. He was looking things up in the unreleased docs on his iPad.

That was all I had to ask about. Toyota had one each of the 4Runner, tundra and Tacoma pro, all in cement. They also had a 2016 Tundra pro mounted on its side so you could see the underside plainly with all the pro upgrades clearly labeled.
