I've been going to the same family run shop for years and they're super cool and will work with me, but I think it would be asking a bit much. It's a small shop and doing that slow delicate work for 4 big assed tires would slow them down quite a bit.

Only option is new beads or vacuum them out with a shop vac yourself and then have them swap them over.

What about removing the tire, depressurizing by removing the valve stem core and the drilling a small hole in the sidewall of the tire big enough to "drain" the beads out? Then remove as normal. It would render the used tire useless, so this may not work for Nick since he's trying to swap tires from one set of rims to another, but perhaps for future use? The sidewall should be easy enough to drill through even on a 10-ply tire. You could use a spade bit or something to ensure a good bore.

    To save the beads...

Note: This process takes time and a tire shop will tell you to kick rocks if you want to get it done there.

Break the bead on the wheel with your tire tool, pour .5 cup dishwashing soap into wheel. Your beads will clump into the soap making recovering them easier.

After tire is off wheel scrape / wipe out soapy beads and rise / dry them and then reapply to next wheel set.

Go buy some airsoft beads at your local walmart and use them. Theyll do the same thing. That was my plan but then i bought wheels too so they came balanced already.

    I don't understand this. ...

I've done a few sets of tires with beads. Never used anything but a horizontal machine.

Are you using the ceramic dynabeads?

Have you ever tried to get water out of a tire?

They shouldn't. They don't fall out for me.

That's why I asked if you've ever tried to get water out of an old tire. No matter how you position it water (and beads) go to the lowest point.

Thanks for all the great suggestions.

I might be able to make it...

    Excellent point. Thank you.

The tire shops tell me that they can't guarantee success. I think I'll have them try one and see how it goes. Worst case, they spill them and end up using wheel weights. And at a later time I clean the weights off and add beads myself. :)

    Amazing build and thread man!

I was wondering if you could take some pics of how you attached the 4' section of ABS to the rack? I'm going to be installing a Thule Tracker II rack that I will need to mount a piece of 4" ABS conduit to for fishing rod storage. Trying to find the best way. Thanks!

Yes. I managed to capture this picture over the weekend. The beads are ceramic.

    Thank you for your explanation.

So the devil is in the details on this one...

I wasted no time once I decided to have the shop swap the tires. Got it done last Friday.

Despite carefully explaining to the shop manager what the scenario was, they still spilled the beads during the final dismounting process on the machine. But only on the first tire. How much, nobody knows... After that, they were much more careful and used a manual tire iron in conjunction with the machine and spilled no more.

    Other notes:
    • I got there early, and was in and out in 36 minutes!
    • I paid $100, to shop for swapping tires to 4runner wheels which included reprogramming the TPMS ECU.
    • I indexed the rubber to the valve stem with chalk and they matched the index to the valve stems on the new 4runner wheels.
    • They did not rotate them at my request, as tires were already rotated.
    • Some beads (10 maybe), get stuck between the TPMS sensor and the wheel. They became dislodged when I took the old sensors out of the TRD wheels.
I sold my seven year old sensors for $30 on craigslist. Thank you very much.
    IMG_20160212_095202_a94dc41e2db62c5df5eee83b7a2fc72a83ab94d3.jpg

    Listed these for $200.
    IMG_20160212_100000_c2dcbc56d2f3144dcce34679ac40f2e45a2111e6.jpg

And finally pics of the new wheels mounted up.
    DSC04864_62a5c0000d9dc052ea1958dceab6c9c84a2ec859.jpg

Center caps painted and installed. Thanks again @scocar I followed your path and it worked well! Much appreciated. :)
    IMG_20160214_073303_45792f917ed951644da620e1601feb609b43ed74.jpg

I will say that I underestimated how much I would like these new wheels. I really like them a lot and they make the truck look different and new... Bottom line is that full lock-to-lock steering has been restored with no more rubbing on the UCA, LCA, and Frame. I still rub some mud flap under compression on the drivers side and I'll fix that later... Very happy with the new 4runner wheels and it feels good to take something that was 15 years old and give it new life on my truck. The Denso TPMS sensors are also a win, working great and I expect to get 7-10 years from them. :)
