2005-2015 Morimoto Mini D2S Bi-Xenon projector install guide

Ive seen people cut the nut on the back of the projector to make it fit in the space. that's the only other way I've seen it done. Especially with the newer kits, I guess some of the hardware is different from old write ups on here. I followed this guide and had no trouble whatsoever. The only hard part is opening the light so don't let the cutting deter you from doing this. Personally, after doing this I would've much rather gone with the FX-R projectors and cut my reflectors to hell. If you don't have a Dremel or sander, go pick one up they'll come in handy on other projects around the house. You're going to drop $300+ on projectors so $100 for a tool you're probably gonna use in the future at some point is worth it.

 

I'm curious how long it takes the first timers to get this done? I'm sure the guys who've done a bunch have got the hang of it but I'm wondering what the general consensus is to complete this project. Half a day? All day? A couple of days?

 

i took a day including painting. first retrofit i tried

 

It took me all weekend just because I wanted the paint to dry all the way. Without painting and starting at the right time, you could be finished in about 3-5 hours. A lot of time is wasted waiting on paint to dry, for the sun to go down.

 

Thanks fellas I actually painted mine about a week ago. Should be getting the kit on Friday. So if I have to grind I will have to take the bowls off as well.

For a 2006 Tacoma: Does the hardware or projector in newer D2S retrofit kits require you to grind down the back (even for a 2006)? That would not allow the "centering key" to do it's job. I installed an older TRS D2S retrofit kit in my 2006 w/o any grinding down and it worked fine.

 

I could be wrong but their newer version's shaft is shorter. Also, the h4 adaptors won't work since toyota rotated it (drivers side i think) for some reason.

 

I have an 05-11 reflector here in the lobby and it is keyed correctly. As long as you use the tiny knurled nut (if we are still even including these with the Mini D2S 3.0s, I'm not sure), no cutting is required at all. If we are not including these, there will be a little cutting required to use the larger hex lock nut.

 

How do you run the wires coming off the solenoid through the boot?

 

Next to the bulb and with an 80mm rubber dome-style housing cap

Would you happen to have a picture of how that cap looks on the back of the lights?

 

I checked some of my other build threads and couldn't find any of the back of the housing, but the 80mm is a very good fit.

 

So, it's just to seal the back of the bulb better?

Just to clarify something for me: When doing a retrofit like this you can paint the reflector bowl black since it's not being used to reflect light, rather the light is being projected from the new retrofit pieces? So everything can be painted black and not left silver?
