    and the oil battle begins...

Bottom line is thinner oil is thinner and thicker oil is thicker....

That's it, you can run any oil you want....

thinner oil won't last as long, has better performance has less lubrication that's it....

I built street and race engines for 5 years and have seen what happens when you run oil too long...

The quality of the oil is more important than the weight.....

Oil is not magic it's just oil...........

In my race bike I run 10-40 and it's good for 1 or 2 days, in my truck it's good for 4000 miles....
The top guy runs 0-20 but rebuilds his engine a few times a year I have to run my engine all year so I use thicker oil...

Last summer after going to the dunes I changed it at 2000 miles....

It's like saying if you ever drink well water you can't drink bottled water....

going from 5w to 10w will make no difference.... 10w will be better oil, 5w better performance...

My MPG hasn't been better with 30w so will go back to 40w so my engine last longer and can hold up to heat better....

This is from Amsoil's lube guide. FWIW.

[1] 5W-30 is the best choice for good fuel economy and starting
in cold weather. If 5W-30 is not available 10W-30 may be
used. However, it must be replaced with 5W-30 at the next
    oil change.

Oil idiots say don't useit because of the manual. In the old days we would switch on purpose for winters.

Those were the days when engine temps wernt nearly as static when warmed up and you didnt have synthetics that could do a spread like 0w-30 and had to choose from 0w-10 or 10w-30

Today is different, get out of the "in the old day mentalities"

0w-30 synthetic will last just as long as 10w-30 synthetic. When the polymers break down in a synthetic they default to a straight 30w

With standard oil a 5w-30 will obviously not last as long as synthetic, but also when the polymers break down they default to their thinner weight.... a broken down 5w-30 standard oil will end up being 5 wt at operating temp when its fully broken down, this is why you get excessive wear from a motor thats long overdue for an oil change using standard oil.

Engines are designed with tolerances, theses tolerances determine the oil weight needed to run the motor at operating temp, regardless of ambient temps. Our 1GR-FE in our 2nd gen tacomas are designed around a 30wt oil at operating temp, thus any Xw-30 should be used.

Outta here. No intelligence being offered. No matter what put up in 5w30 oil or it will shit the bed. Fucking ridiculous.

Straight out of the service manual.

    oil.jpg

Note: that at the time this service manual was made 0w-30 synthetic was not a thing (2006) as such it says nothing about 0w-30 But that stated, applying a little logic to it... 0w-30 would be an even better choice than 5w-30

TLDR, Dont run anything thicker than Xw-30 in the 1GR.... it has the possibility to cause excess wear

if we get 12 more references to the "owners manual recommendations", maybe the self appointed lube experts on here will........hell, I don't know what I was thinking.

Looks like convention says that 10w-30 is okay, at least temporarily, and I would expect it is better to use in warm weather than in cold, so I'll go ahead and use it in a couple months when I do my next oil change. Didn't mean to cause such a shitstorm of hair pulling.

You will get the same thing for every question, all the experts come out and say there is only 1 way to do anything based on nothing....
I knew this would happen but still wanted to help...
You will be fine the difference is very, very minor..... Slightly thicker oil is good not bad...... so you will have slightly better oil that maybe get slightly less MPG....

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
My understanding is that when the outside temperature is above 60 degrees you can run straight 30w and below 60 degrees is when multi-vis oils come into play but I could be wrong.

Evidently Aimsoil copied this from Toyota or visa-versa. Same verbiage in my Tacoma manual.

I wouldn't, at least not in cold weather. 0W30 would be ok for me but not 10w30. I'd get too picky about that.

Just a personal thing. The are all the same viscocity at operating temp.
