Because it looks tacky and lazy otherwise.

I need to have shoulder surgery, I still get my ass out there to shovel.
It is also incredibly respectful and courteous to those people who need to walk on your driveway or sidewalk (ie UPS/FedEx). I am held liable if someone gets hurt on my property because it isn't reasonably maintained.

I also don't like dragging in snow from my driveway to my garage if I can avoid it.

52 Ford 8N with backblade does the trick for me. Rare but only have had to plow 2 times this year. Sunday was -32 here and today 44 and pouring rain. Crazy year !

You can actually get fined here for not shoveling your sidewalk before 10am on the morning after a snowfall. After clearing my sidewalk I always at least shovel a path to my door for the Mailman and the Paperboy.

I even shovel/snow throw around and to my propane tank for the delivery man. No natural gas lines within 80 miles or more. You try spending a day dragging hose or walking thru deep snow then have to clear a tank off.

With that kind of snowfall you wouldn't have to worry about shoveling even if you had a 2wd...

You could shovel that with an electric leaf blower.

They do that here too, but for good reason.

When sidewalks aren't cleared, people walk in the street. Since we get about 200 inches of snow a year, it would be dangerous to have people walking in the street.
