Removing your headliner and insulating/sound deadening

Well said @DVexile , the tint in my truck has a ceramic quality, if that makes any sense, I notice the interior temp in my truck with my window tint, is lower then my friends identical truck, but there's no ceramic in his tint, both our windows are tinted to the same amount, and both vehicles are the same color, and we both live and work in the same part of town here in Vegas

 

Ceramic tint people.

Well said, excellent information here. I also have ceramic tint on my windows but I also use a metallic windshield cover whenever I am parked for long periods of time in the sun. Just another piece of the puzzle.

 

To be honest, you could probably insulate the sunglass holder area exclusively without having to drop the headliner. Removing the plastic trim panel leaves a pretty big hole and gives you enough room to work in that area. Doing the rest of the roof does help though. (at least I think so, so far).

 

Have you noticed a difference @GHOST SHIP since putting all that in???

 

Hey John! I want to say that I did, but it's really only been two days and I haven't taken and temp readings yet. But it does feel better. I'm going to do a direct comparison soon with another buddies truck that is almost identical to mine where I'll take temp readings from different places in both trucks after having them parked in the same place under the sun. That's the only way I can think to see if there is an actual difference with the insulation. I imagine with you being in AZ now, it may benefit you to know for sure. I'll post here once I am able to find time for both of us to try this out.

 

Exactly!!!! I have covered parking at my place of domicile and work at night so I don't have to worry about that but I don't want to do that forever and will Still have to brave the heat on those days I'm not working. I'll be getting a reflective windshield thingy for sure and have the ceramic tint as well so hopefully that will help !!!! I look forward to seeing the results of this test

 

I'll post here as soon as it happens. I was also thinking of adding one more layer of insulation to the roof so I might end up taking the thing apart again. Not sure yet, I want to see how much of a difference I've made with the current products installed.

Haha! Maybe. I actually did a test drop of the headliner the previous weekend because I wanted to see how hard it was. I didn't even have the sound deadener at the time. Third time should be faster, I think...

What can I say? I was one of those kids that liked to take stuff apart. Seems I haven't changed.... Except I get less "extra parts" now...

 

I have taken the car seats out of the back seat twice to prep for the panel and that made me cranky enough.

 

I hear you. For something like this because I have a specific end result in mind, I don't mind doing the work. Trail and error. It might help someone that wants to do this in the future. Trust me though, I'd rather be doing this than be under the truck with greasy parts...

 

So after spending the weekend in the beautiful Anza Borrego desert camping and wheeling with a few other members, I can say with full confidence that the insulated headliner works! No official instrument testing yet, but I could definitely feel the difference. I may still add one more layer of insulation just for added piece of mind. I will say (as other have already pointed out) that the Achilles heel to this project is always going to be your windows. I felt the majority of heat penetrating my truck through the windshield since it is the only glass on my truck that is not tinted. I may add a layer of carbon tinting in the lightest possible shade I can find. I thought I saw that my installer has a "clear" carbon tint that is supposed to be just for this. More on that as I research it.

 

I have a tinted windshield and side windows, and am happy with the performance of my tint, but I do have a couple of things for you to consider before having your windshield tinted:

It's not legal in California, unless you have a medical reason for it, which I do, and carry a doctor's letter with my registration. I can't tell the windshield is tinted from the inside looking out, but it is visible from outside looking through, so if I ever get stopped, I'd expect to have to show my letter.

Here in the San Francisco Bay Area, we have an electronic reader called "Fast Trak", a system that reads your ID and deducts bridge tolls from your prepaid account. The device is intended to install on your windshield, but many do not, as it may become the target for thieves. Holding it up to the windshield while passing the reader is hit and miss, as I've received tickets in the mail from the reader failing to read my device. If installed as intended, the tint would have been removed at the install site, making the device more readable.

 

Also interestingly to note, it is never necessary to tint your front windshield for UV protection, it's built into the laminated glass, 99.99% UV protection right from the factory.

 

Thank you for that, it should be addressed. I'm aware of the tint laws in CA and very well aware of the FastTrack in the Bay Area. Just got my ticket last week. Haha! I forgot to turn on the "avoid tolls" in my GPS and got nailed. My fault for not carrying cash.
The "tint" I was referring to is a clear, untinted film that is supposed to help with UV and is specifically made for heat reduction. When I first saw it, I though it was snake oil so I didn't bother looking into it further, but now I may go back and revisit the product. My tint guy is a good dude and may give me a small break if I ask nicely. If it's worth my while or I get more info, I'll post here. Although I could be wrong and it could still be snake oil...
