    Current smart phones have higher resolution and similar to larger screens that most handheld GPS units.
    Download the Topo Maps for the area/region you're planning to go to before hand (preferably on wifi).
    GPS location works without cell service. Scroll around and see what's nearby.

    Edit: the green are all the topo quadrants I have on my phone.

    True, but not free like I thought I remembered either. Gaia seems to be the most interesting currently. Also allows downloaded Satellite Images to go with Topo Maps.
