I got my 2006 DCSB TRD offroad last month with about 80,000 miles and couldn't be happier with it. Only thing is, I was on a trip and let a friend drive it (only time I ever lent it out) and he hit some black ice and did a number on it. Damage to the bed is the most expensive item from the estimates I got. I can't do insurance (will go up too much) but can't pay out of pocket for all the repairs. Now that I've gotten over my rage about the price of repairs, I'm trying to look on the bright side and see what I can do to fix the taco while doing upgrades I wanted to do anyways - why pay for OEM replacements that are more expensive when that's not what I want in the long run. I can get it road legal by getting bumpers on there and the taillight fixed. Other than that I'm looking for ways to fix the bed on the cheap. Thinking about a relentless fab DIY plate bumper and some type of plate rear bumper replacement, then going to auto salvage places to try and find the left side bed panel, fender flare, and quarter panel. Any other suggestions are welcome.

Have the "friend" pay for the damages. He was careless.

Lemme see some pics. All my Toyota trucks were wrecks. Its fun putting them back together.

Some people go to the casino to gamble. I buy a wrecked Toyota truck that doesn't run or drive hoping I can put it back on the road. Batting 1000 so far.

The insurance would go up way more than the cost of repairs so if anything he could help pay for repairs out of pocket but I also let him drive to be the designated driver and a lot of the cause was road conditions.

Forget the insurance issue people. He just want to fix it himself. Lets go from there.

Please show us some pics when you get a chance. There is a lot of knowledge on this site.

Drank too much to drive. Let friend drive instead. Friend gets in accident.

Not really his fault anymore than its yours.

Hopefully you can rebuild and be Bueno.

    Welcome to TW.

Not true in California unfortunately...The insurance follows the vehicle. Meaning, if you own the title to a vehicle, but let someone drive it and they have an accident, it's your insurance company that is on the hook.

That said, I don't know what state the OP is in and I assume the damages are not worth the cost of a claim.

Totally in agreement. My fault for lending it to him under the circumstances but better than me trying to drive.

Tie off the truck, and take a come along and pull that back bumper back to a normal shape. Or Know someone with a back hoe. Lots of vehicle have had iron straightened by pulling with a back hoe bucket.

Ouch. That's several thousand in repair at a shop - I can't fathom a full coverage policy that would increase enough with a claim on it to justify not fixing your truck, or just a few pieces DIY and dealing with it in its current state.

    Best of luck.

    That's what insurance is for.

if you're that scared, fix it w your insurance and shop for a new provider

I agree, several thousand for a shop to fix the truck. Not that much to make it road legal.

I think I'm pretty set on this route. It drives perfect and seems to have no frame damage so right now I'm just looking to get it so I won't get pulled over and can work on less crucial repairs as time and budget allow.

Start by going to the for sale section. Lots of people have changed to aftermarket bumpers. Factory take off bumpers are dirt cheap. Seriously, most cant get rid of their old bumpers and end up taking them to the dump.

Any ideas for a cheap DIY rear bumper option until I can spring for a plate bumper?
