I think that makes sense, if not a bit low. Every recent V8 truck I've driven gets right around 20mpg highway. I have a company fleet card for gas, have to enter the odometer when I fill up, I get the statements monthly....and I'm a little ocd with numbers so I for some reason actually do the math on it. I honestly don't experience any significant difference in gas mileage in any of these trucks. Why do the smaller ones get the same mpg? I don't know but I'm just guessing that since they weigh almost the same amount, and have smaller engines, that's probably got something to do with it.

Moral of the story V8 Taco = better highway mpg?

    The 3.5 L did exist in 2013.

If someone thinks a 5.3 L GM engine pulls harder off the line then a 3.5 L Ecoboost they are crazy. Even the 6.2 L doesn't pull as hard off the line.

For me, it just seemed a bit unrefined, slow to respond. For example, going 60, slowing down to 30, and then hard on the gas....it laaaaaags. I don't think anyones buying a truck for off the line acceleration, but I don't doubt you.

I'll have to go back and look at what motor is in that truck, it's a 2012 for sure.

Never compared those too. The 4x4 twin I had for the weekend after 200 miles got 23 mpg.

The Taco got 17 after 225 mile weekend test drive.

Then I took the 2wds out, Taco lost again... But by a lot wider margin.

There is PLENTY of proof the twins and other trucks are getting MUCH better mpg.

Also, no to the gear ratio being 2 mpg different. Again, its not the 70s. Unless your towing or drag racing, there is less then 1 mpg difference.

Yeah mustang sally must have been doing lines off one of the diffs to get that 4-5 mpg difference. What was I thinking, gotta credit you though, those 220 mile drives are certainly the be all end all.

Thats my third post in a roll with that emoticon, I'm on a roll.

Yes, those 3.5 eco's are damn quick for a truck. 0-60 in under 6 seconds typically

It translates to towing as well. A smaller V6 turbo, somewhat like Fords 2.7 L Ecoboost, would be sweet in a truck the size of the Tacoma.

6.2l gm with the 8 speed is the new 1/4 mile king, even ahead of the 3.5 Eco boost with aluminum body. I don't think turbo charging is the answer, but that's just me.

For the people talking trash on the gear ratios, the higher sped rear ends not being able to tow. I suggest you get into a hemi with 3.21's and the newer zf 8 speed and tell me it's slow, or that you even feel a difference between that and say the optional 3.92's

Hopefully the day comes where Toyota can make a Tacoma get close to 30 mpg.

Ford will have a 10 speed in 2017. That will put the Ecoboost back ahead.

BTW the 6.2 L and 3.5 L tied this year in the quarter mile. The track times depended more on the drivers rather than the trucks.

The only way we will see a 30 mpg Tacoma is with less air resistance or some revolutionary engine/motor. That, or lower the truck and give it a similar profile to a car.

I am getting just under 20mpg average because I have done a ton of off roading. I usually get around 22-24 mpg on tanks when we don't off road.

I don't see a problem here. The averages on Fuelly for full sized trucks are in the 12-14 range. Even if the new Tacoma is getting 17-18 average, that's nearly 35% better.

    I don't see a problem here

The city mileage sucks in a full size, at least from the ones I own, use for work. My biggest complaint is highway mileage, after all that's where I put the most miles on.

Your mileage is good, for mixed driving I agree, nothing to complain about there. Does it go up if you only drive highway, say 70 mph?

Are you talking to me? I get around 25-26 average at 60mph and 23-24 average at 70-75 mph on highways around here where it's legal

Only used it once on the last tank. Its nice but I don't do that kind of aggressive driving in my truck. (The MX5 is good enough for that) This is certainly better fuel mileage than my Gen 2s
