I pressed the ECT button once while getting on the freeway. It shifted at 3800 rpm while I was slowly accelerating. I have never touched it since

My brother has a '13 ecoboost, and that thing pulls hard under most circumstances. I am not sure you drove an ecoboost if you felt it was slow and "laaaaaged" ... I had a Lightning, 5.4L supercharged, and I'd say the ecoboost would give that thing a solid run for the money, stock v. stock. Not a bet I'd want to take, for sure.

I think the Taco v6 should be compared to another v6. Mileage seems similar to me. I traded a 2008 Ford Ranger for my 2016 Taco, and just before I traded it, the Ford was averaging 16L/100km, (14.7 mpg). For Tacoma, I missed the first fill-up calculation, but the second and third fill-ups were 18.5 L/100km (12.7 mpg) and 17.5 L/100km (13.4 mpg). Both vehicles were 4x4, manual transmissions, double cab Taco vs access cab Ranger. The Tacoma fuel use seems to be dropping down (I expect it to, as the snow melts, and I can drive in 2wd), although so far it lags behind the Ford. But there is nothing else that's comparable, other than the engine size. Tacoma has double the towing capacity of my Ranger, and is far more refined. Adjusted for inflation, Tacoma is also $18K more expensive (Canadian pricing). Can't speak for Taco reliability yet, but can't speak for Ranger's reliability either- there was none. While on warranty it had minor electrical issues. However, mechanically, the suspension and braking components were junk. After warranty expired, I had to spend hundreds of dollars replacing them multiple times, even though I didn't abuse the vehicle. I bought the Taco for its perceived reliability, but also for advertised mileage.

Don't know, the last time I had one to ride around in was a year ago, and one about a year before that. Both times it just did not feel up to the standards of other V8s, including Ford V8s. I have not driven enough turbos to really know what turbo lag is like, does the echo boost not experience a similar issue? The truck just never felt right to me.

My day driver is a 2015 Lexus GX460 with the V8 and it gets a city/hwy average of 18mpg. My 2016 Taco off-road 4x4 gets an average of 16.4mpg with 3,000 miles on the odometer. I do like the truck, but the mpg is definitely a huge disappointment. Once you get over about 74mph the mpg just go down drastically!

My problem is that these trucks are seriously under powered. Every hill or headwind the truck hits, it drops into fourth and screams. I do all interstate driving. When a truck has enough or more power than it "needs", you dont have to get into the throttle as much to keep it going. This truck, at least for my driving, is so underpowered that it is constantly having to downshift to maintain speed. I keep it in fifth because sixth is a joke. I'm not going to be able to take it much longer. I love the tacoma but I am very disappointed! I had a f150 with the 6.2 and averaged 18.5. With the Tacoma I'm averaging 16. But as I've said before, I'm not concered so much with the MPG's as I am about the joy of driving and this truck is no joy.

That's BS that because it's a truck the mpg shouldn't matter. The fact that I'm getting better mpg from my 2013 F250 isn't good. There are many things that are wrong with the new truck. I wouldn't buy a gen 3 Tacoma again if I could! It's not helping when the truck won't even stay on Over Drive on the freeway while going over a small overpass.

Did you not test drive it?

I assumed he/she was talking about an actual issue. Not the (what some believe) erratic shifting. Thats what I get for assuming people are somewhat smart. lol

I took it back to the dealership already just so they can tell me that that's the way Toyota's new engine works now. Toyota is so proud of this brand that they will do and say anything to protect themselves. I did test drive the truck but not long enough to notice these problems..

I bought the tacoma because of its size, not MPG. My brothers and fathers V8's get better mileage than me, and if we were both towing 3000-4000 lbs, that mpg gap would widen further. I also would like to know why the V6's cant get better mileage than a V8, but it wasnt my concern.

Well maybe Toyota could be a little more honest with the customers. I got rid of my 2006 pre-runner thinking I was getting a better truck. There's a lot that I do like about the 2016, but the mpg and the crazy shifting issue are really a damper on the Toyota brand. People are so into the Tacoma that they are coming up with excuses for the mpg and erratic shifting. This crazy idea that the truck is somehow going to adjust to your driving is absurd, I have over 3000 miles on mine and nothing has changed..

Yeah if you're that unhappy with it, I wouldn't expect it to get better. Cars are like a big pile of money in the wind. The longer you have it the more blows off the pile. Sell it and move on unless you're holding out hope they will offer a reprogram for the tranny.

I almost got rid of it this past weekend, but yeah I'm hoping that they are listening to our complaints and something will be done soon.
