Changing differential fluid - A step by step "HOW TO"

if its like my 2015 you need to actually engage it via the dash mounted switch.... Normally its off.

So what is the consensus on synthetic? I've heard not to put synthetic in diffs. Still trying to learn all maintenance requirements...

 

many people use synthetic.

 

What brand is most used?

 

I used Mobil 1.

 

I use Amsoil in my diffs, transfer case, trans and engine. No issues so far.

 

Just to re update myself and read a lot of the pages and changed the oil before, but would like to just double check again

Have a 07 TRD Sport with LSD rear diff.

Looks a lot of people like Royal Purple 75w90

1. RP says it already has aditive ls - does that mean I should not add any?

2. do I use RP in front and transfer case too? or Mobile 1 or so?

3. all rear, front and trasfer will take 75w90?

4. any arguments against RP?

My argument against #4 is $$$.

 

I just changed my rear end from an elocker type to a LSD from an 07. Changed gear oil. Thing was dark as night. Used Lucas Dino oil and the additive. So far so good and no chattering.

I was going to say,"nothing wins with a floor jack handle!". Plus a six point socket only. And Kroil....Amazon has it and it ain't cheap. Glad I did read this long ass thread. I rediscovered Kroil from TW.

 

From all the well known guys in NC that do gear installs, they all say do not run synthetic. Why I have no idea but when they all say the same thing I'll take their word for it. I'm waiting to finish my 500 miles for gear break in before putting some Lucas 75w-140 in.

 

Maybe helpful (or heck, maybe already stated in these 106 pages somewhere); a 15/16th's standard socket works great in lieu of a 24mm. Its technically not 24 (23.8), but I had no trouble at all and did not harm the plugs in any way. 40ft-lbs (a bit over spec...) was no where near enough to sheer/round corners. I really couldn't tell it wasn't perfect, actually.

 

I have a 06 trd sport w/LSD rear diff as well. I am also wondering if the RP, that says it already has an additive LS, still needs the extra 4oz of additive?!

 

If you have the sticker, then yes.

 

So basically if an oil says LS or states that it contains friction modifier additive for limited slip differentials..... It just means the oil is compatible for a LSD diff and will work with extra additive. Thanks!

I just finished change and fill on mine, 2 new crush washers and 3.5 qts of Mobil 1 synthetic

75w-90. And relocated the rear diff breather behind the drivers side taillight while waiting to drain.
