If you purchase a Tacoma without the factory installed tow package, you will not be able to install this option. Your truck will not have the correct wiring harness to add this later. The towing harness will have a round plug back by the bumper to connect to the 7 pin/4 pin receptacle which mounts in the bumper. Toyota doesn't even have the cheesy splice in for the 4 pin flat. Your only option at this point will be to splice into the wiring, which I was told by Toyota, will void your warranty. Well, I confess, there is another option, you can purchase the entire harness that goes from the front of the truck to the bumper (and lots of other places). This harness is about $1000. But...It may or may not attach at the front of the truck. Do not buy a Tacoma without the tow option! When did Toyota become so hostile to the consumer?
I have a manual transmission. I just need to be able to plug in my trailer lights. It almost seems like Toyota is being spiteful. WTF Toyota!!??

If you knew you needed to tow, why wouldn't you purchase the tow package?

you have to remember, production line install is way cheaper than doing it at the dealer. easier to pay $650 now than $1k later for parts and that doesn't include labor :)

its the one option you should always pick on a Tacoma regardless if you need it or not. and resale value of you truck for this option, you really don't lost money on this $650 since every dealer asks if you have the tow package anyway.

Splicing into the taillight wires will NOT immediately void your warranty. The aftermarket part has to be connected to the fault for them to deny a claim...

confused...it is extremely easy to add your own tow harness from scratch or convert any size / pin config to another ? why on esrth would you ever rely on a dealer for this ?

Tow package is almost on every model about SR5. Good to have even if you do not tow. Makes your truck more dependable.

The cost of the tow package includes MUCH more than a wiring harness; it's actually one of the better 'values' in the options check list.

For towing light duty stuff you don't need it though.

Just add your own hitch, your own 4 pin, and call it a day.

They can NOT void your warranty for adding the 4 pin unless they prove that the damaged part was specifically caused by the 4 pin install.

Damage is almost impossible unless the person doing the installation is a complete ham fisted klutz.

Even doing it 'wrong' typically only results in the lights not working properly (L/R reversed, etc) or maybe a blown fuse. Since there is no power back feed from a 4 pin, it would be very unlikely to cause any other wiring system damage.

Do you think it should be cheaper to retrofit it? If so no one would get the tow package. Also adding the 7 pin requires some wires in the fuse block for a 12v battery charging fuse and relay.

this is direct quote from the Toyota brochure :

if you can find someone to buy and install all that for less than $650, I would expect them to tell you to keep your mouth shut or you might find yourself looking at a pine box :)

I have the SR model with a manual transmission. Tow package for my truck consist of a receiver hitch and a connector. Pretty simple. I actually ordered the truck with the tow option but the dealer screwed up my order after about two months, I go to pickup my truck and no tow package! They said "We can reorder the truck."
I said, "I need the truck. I can't wait another 6 weeks." They told me they would add the tow option for the original option cost when the parts become available, so I bought the truck. That was December 1. There are still no parts available. My point is, why is the truck not pre-wired for trailer lights? It is pre-wired for cruise control.
I purchased a Curt hitch, but cannot source any wiring. I'm going to start calling Toyota Corporate every day and tell them I want to go fishing but my worthless Toyota can't be configured to illuminate a light bulb in a trailer. Pathetic!

Well, then you'd just be showing your lack of Google-fu.

"Custom" means you have to cut the wires and splice. Maybe this is okay if you are into trailer park warranty voiding modifications on your brand new truck! And where do you get the power from? A single wire run up to the battery shoved under the battery cable? Is this the best Toyota can do? Oh wait, Toyota has nothing because someone wanting to tow with their new truck is just silly.

Seems to be several options, less than $1,000, for you if you look. Or, wait for the dealer to acquire the parts since it's much more than the receiver and wiring.

It will not void your warranty. Please read up on the Magnuson-Moss act. Tons of people get hitches and wiring installed. You are seriously making a mountain out of a molehill here. You could have your hitch installed tomorrow and be done with it. Warranty intact. Otherwise wait for the dealer, but don't complain.

U-Haul can get a receiver on there and wired in an hour, and they guarantee their work. Easy-peasy.

I could splice into my new wiring and have a four pin flat dangling down, ghetto style. The point is, Toyota could have made the truck easily up-gradable for towing a trailer. This is not an exotic modification. It's a freakin truck! It's like Toyota could not conceive of someone doing this. Why in the world would you want to tow something with a truck?

Are you reading the replies to your thread? I'm starting to think you aren't. It isn't a major issue. As capt. said, go to uhaul and you'll be done in an hour.
