Well, it looks as if I'm PCSing to Travis AFB next month. Never met any of you but hoping you can help make this short notice move a little less painful.

How are the vehicle laws and how strict are they in following them? Ive done a couple mods to the Taco...

Hate to ask this one, but gun laws as well? Ive got a small collection.....

Also any of you Mil folks know if there is a waiver/process for either?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Will you be living near Travis? If you live north of the base in Yolo county it's much easier to get a CCW than south of the base.

Not sure what truck mods you're referring to, but it's rare to be pulled over for a mod unless it's super loud or something like that. But if you get pulled over for speeding and the cop wants to be an ass, he can get you for whatever he wants to.

For the weapons there are no waivers, unless your a California law enforcement officer, even for military... All weapons are 10 round max, and assault rifles need to have a bullet button installed on them. (AK's and AR's) Most weapons are banned just based on make and model, i.e. glockgen4's are not allowed but gen3's are. CCW's are issued by county, I lived in Sonoma County and it was damn near impossible to get one. It's sad but that is the unfortunate truth. On a positive note I hope your PCS goes well, I hear Travis is a nice instillation.

As far as I know, you can bring Gen4's in, just can't buy them new because it's not in the CA roster.

That is true you can "personal import" them but not purchase in state.

    Thanks for all the info.

Ive done a few engine mods, Intake, smaller SC pulley, Long tube headers, Y pipe and the exhaust is dumped right after the axel. Don't recall how tough CAs emission laws/inspections were.

I can deal with the reduced capacity magazines but Ive got a few rifles that they don't make bullet buttons for...

Looks like I lucked out and only had one rifle on the banned list. Also should only cost me about a grand removing flash hiders, replacing them with brakes and installing bullet buttons. Granted I still need to buy new mags or block my current...

Also glad I kept my factory exhaust for when smog rolls around.

For you guys that know the area, any first hand recommendations on where live? About an hour drive from Travis is cool. Wife, two kids (1 in a wheelchair) and a dog. Prefer to limit the crowds/amount of people and great schools are a must. Kind of leaning towards Davis...

I was going to mention Davis. Sacramento is a really cool city as well and I lived there for a little while. No idea about the school districts though.
North of Travis will be WAY cheaper than south of it.

Look in Benicia for a nice family oriented community.

Good suggestion- sorry that I didn't chime in earlier. We moved here a little over 2 years ago. Safe community, decent schools, and still somewhat affordable. It's closer to the rest of the bay than people think, and reverse commute to Travis. The downtown is nice too. The 4th of July parade makes you feel like you're in the Midwest. 3 hours and 90 floats.
Maybe @2015whitetaco can chime in- he grew up here.

I grew up in Benicia as well. Spot on assessment. Don't forget to add the award winning parks and after school/summer kids activities. Wind surfing, jet skiing, kayaking, fishing and a cool little Mayberry vibe downtown.

My Pops still lives in Benicia. I moved away for work. I don't think I could go back as it is too far away from the peninsula and I abhor commuting. To have the equivalent of Benicia on the peninsula would only be accessible to multimillionaires...

Thanks again everyone. So far my wife has found a few homes in Davis, Fairfield and Benicia that she likes. Only catch is I don't know if we want to retire in the area, gun laws are way to restrictive for my likeing and homes can get pricey. Also not sure I want to buy only to turn around and try to sell after 3ish years... Man I hate moving.

Moving does suck, but if you buy in CA the odds are good that your home will increase in value. Especially near the Bay Area. You could cash out in a few years rather than throwing money at rent. Just a thought.
