He does a better job than some of the guys clearing the side of the roads in NB! There are several outfits in northern New England that do clearing with a big flail. Personally if I can't pull up brush with my tractor bucket and a chain it gets cut with the chain saw.

A friend cracked the frame on his Jeep pulling out a shrub. It's one thing to pull something that rolls, and totally another to attempt to pull something that is a fixed object. Remember that what you above the ground is only 1/3 of the big picture.

Truthfully listen to the old guys that say don't yank, we pull -small- stumps out with pickup trucks all the time, larger stumps we grind (that machine weighs 8000 lbs)

After reading 3 pages of... sarcasm/Toolman Taylor/actual knowledge/fake knowledge/hilarity, this is closest to where I stand. Try it. Try it cautiously and with your brain. And if its not working, dont force it.

I've used my truck to pull a number of root balls out of the ground, no ill effect, and always using 4 low and judicious throttle control.

Indicate wet years in this instance

It was a big tree, we charged $12,500 to remove it, took 2.5 days

Not in the driveshaft - at least not mine. All u-joints. The Dakota has a CV shaft in the front driveshaft, which is what failed.

Only CV joints in my drivetrain are on the front half shafts, where they belong. Not in the driveshafts.

This thread got popular since the last time I visited! I won't be pulling any bushes until the snow is gone. But this is the rootball of the bush that fought my Dakota, it might not look like much but it broke traction in 4 low trying to remove it. We had to cut roots, clear with the pick and then finally pluck it out with the truck. That dirt patch in front of it is from another one we had pulled out image.jpg

Well you have a CV or if you prefer a constant velocity joint on your drive shaft it is a double cardan joint it's just not made with ball bearings. Dodge has a live axle it has to have more drive shaft movement the CV was a perfect answer to the problem. The ball type CV joint is actually stronger because of the larger surface area.

    rootballs can be deceiving.
I would shorten the strap though.
This will help with upward pull, while also providing a downward force on the truck.
