Hey everyone, I'm new to the forum. Just purchased a 2001 V6 standard Tacoma with 138,000 miles, with a tonneau cover, bed cap, tool box and exta set of rims for 7,700.

The frame looks overall pretty good, but there is a spot on the cab mount that's rusting through (the mount itself not the boxed part of the frame). The frame had been under coated by the dealer when the previous owner owned it. My question is, since the frame recall isn't in effect anymore but Toyota tried to save the frame and it's obviously failing, is there any chance Toyota would honor this and repair the rust issue since their remedy didn't work?

Also, new to toyotas, is there anything or any advice I should know about these trucks?

Have the VIN number checked at your local Toyota dealer, IF the truck was taken in on the frame recall and treated by Toyota then the warranty on the frame is changed to 15 years from the day of the truck being sold. Get it into your dealer ASAP. I just bought a 2003 last fall, but I checked the VIN first to ensure that he had been treated by a dealer. Took it straight to my dealer, they checked it and started ordering all the parts for it.

FYI, that's a damn good price on that truck, they go for way more than that here in KY.

Thanks I gotta get on that! I bought the truck from a nice old man who took care of the truck very well.

    Pretty much stock right now
I second that that recommendation. An '01 frame with dealer applied corrosion protection under the frame campaign is going to age out of warranty 15 years from the original in service date. Hope you're still within the warranty period. Let us know how it turns out.

I ran the car fax and the original purchase date was October 2001 so I should still be in the 15 year mark

If inspected before 12/31/11, it should still be covered. You should be good. If the frame is solid and the mount is rusting through you could always buy a new mount and weld it on if they don't honor it for whatever reason. Best of luck

    Very good.

Nice looking truck. Obviously, the biggest concern with 1st gen tacomas is the frame. I can't say I've done much other then normal wear and tear repairs on the four I've owned. Brakes, calipers, belts, exhaust, o2 sensors, fluids-all of them, coils and shocks, lifted-if your in to that sort of thing, lubrication-lots of grease fittings, radio swap-very easy, also did an e-brake cable, steering rack bushings, etc. I do all my own work whenever possible, which is almost all the time, because I'm too cheap to pay someone for things I can do.

Would anyone own four of the same vehicles if they didn't think they were were the best in their class? Not at the same time though, although I did own my '01 and '03 at the same time for a year. Hated to sell that '01.

So what do you guys think? Rust doesn't seem to be through the frame rails but the mounts are deffinitly rotting off. Going to the dealer tomorrow, do you think this qualifies for a new frame?

Thats weird its so isolated to just the mount area. Unfortunately if they cant find or punch a big enough hole through the frame somewhere i really doubt they will do a frame swap for ya...

Is that the rear cab mount where the rust is? Or are all of the mounts like that?

Over the weekend I ended up putting the truck up on the lift at my job and to my suprise I hammered a darn hole right through the frame!!!! The frame looked clean when I bought it but the undercoating was really a nice dress on a dirty rotten whore!

Luckily I brought it into Mariano Rivera Toyota in Mt.Kisco NY (one of the nicest service centers and dealerships I've seen yet), they set me up with a loaner car with out me even asking, offered me food and coffee and by the end of the day called me and said they're going to start ordering parts and my new frame!

Thats Awesome. Just make sure when you get it back to Fluid Film or Krown coat the frame. I live in Buffalo and do mine every year. The added bonus is when I work on it, I don't have any stuck bolts.

    Good luck,
    Charlie

If the truck was undercoated by a dealer, that undercoating should have a warranty on it. I know mine did, and that was what got me a new frame.

I hear ya, I paint cars for a living and will be buying a ton of body wax, putting it in my body wax gun/wand and be soaking the inside of the frame and outside rails every few months
