For all of the owners with the leaking timing cover.

Sorry for the delay in getting these pictures. I'll post them elsewhere as well. Not sure why I never took pictures prior to now, but at least now I have them and can share them.

Here are the two machined locations, on the mating surface of the timing cover, in the location of where the power steering pump resides. As well as where the tsb fix is for.





Here you can clearly see how the mating surface is not even. The first picture is of the gap closest to the top of the timing cover. The second and third pictures are the next slot a little lower.

Just noticed mine is slightly leaking oil in the tsb location. I just hit 90,000 miles. Dealer quoted 1400. I suppose I need to do it myself then cause that is a little much for a new seal. UGGH better get the old Haynes manual and tear into her. Sometimes I wish I got the 2.7 so that my hands don't get smooshed and smashed reaching into these tight 4.0 crevices.

 

It's hard to see in the Pics - but this looks like a mfg defect. IT "looks" link they flat milled the casting gasket location - but did not take enough metal off to ensure that the plane is completely flat. (or, the casting was warped, or they where at the max allow to remove and ) anyway - this looks like a QC miss to me. If it was me I'd tried to get enough info to confirm this then re approach Toyota. I'd like to think that if this is so, Toyota would at least provide the part n/c. JMO

 

What ever the reason that caused the two depressions, as pointed out in the pictures, it is the same across a broad range of year models. Which is one hell of a QC miss. I have 5 timing covers. All from different years. Including the earliest in '03-'04. All the same. It is some part of the manufacturing process. What is the root cause of the two uneven machined spots? That is the real question.

 

Gotcha. As stated - I do not have the part in hand.... What I'd like to do, if possible, is lay a sheet of abrasive paper girt side up, on a surface plate, then kiss the surface with the part gasket surface. If it's off, it will show. Also possible to use this process to flatten out the casting gasket surface. So What does Toyota do ?? Replace the part with the same and hope the gasket can cover the error ???

All that I am aware that they do is remove the old silicone and apply more.

What I do, is remove a little material off of the power steering pump's upper bolt hole casting, with a file. Which presses between the timing cover and the head. That way it no longer presses the timing cover away from the head at that exact point which has the weakest adhesion. Removing just a little, to where the pump can just slide in, will cause the timing cover to be ever so slightly compressed. Furthermore, a bead of external silicone, will help prevent leaks as well. As long as it is a silicone which doesn't require being compressed between mating surfaces.

 

A Couple thoughts... In a pinch and I do not have decent surface plate I've used the milled surface of a table saw.

Also, The way I see it, There is some minor pressure on the back side of the gasket due to Piston blow by, etc. Should your PCV system/hoses/filters, etc. plug up - the pressure build up will not help the leak ...

 

I know nothing of these things so excuse my ignorance but when Toyota "fixed" my timing cover they used some type of black sealant, almost looks like caulk. I'm pretty sure they replaced the gasket as well.

I just bought a 2009 4x4 Taco. This is something I'm going to have to get used to. Just traded in a 2010 Tundra DC Longbed (I don't haul lumber anymore and I need to pull some stumps out). If you want cargo cap get a bigger truck. I've carried 4600 lb loads with that Tundra in the bed and it never squatted. Completely stock truck.

But the truck I just got has some kind of a lift on it and way bigger tires, so now I need to worry about windshields?

 

Welcome, Robin. Congrats on the Taco, I think you'll like the change from the monster.
Your post is a bit misleading however. This thread is about TSBs (Technical Service Bulletins) for the Tacomas. Your post would be best in the new members thread and you would probably get a better response about the lift, tires and windshield there as well.

Actually I've run into a problem with this truck. It was originally sold by Lithia Toyota (36079) and it was traded in the Gulf region for a 2010 Taco a few days ago. It's a nightmare, but I'll do as you ask.

--Don't think this TSB has been reported on the OP yet. I just had my driveshaft and prop assembly replaced this morning and it feels like it has worked. No more potentially rear-ending somebody. Also feels like there is less slop and less vibes overall. I will report back after more driving.

That's a new one for me! Never seen that one.

 

I had been repeatedly told that it was just a "characteristic" of the tacoma, but I finally got a service advisor actually look into it and he found this. Finally somebody I can trust(maybe) at my local dealer! I'll try to find the actual TSB, I believe I have it.

 

I would like to know more about this..so if you do have the tsb please post it...I definitely have this going on and I have 5000 miles till I'm out of warranty.
