Why are people paying mark-up for a toyota? It's not a Lexus or Mercedes.

Rule # 1 = Never pay Mark up
Rule # 2 = Never deal with a dealer with a mark up
    Rule # 3 = Never pay MSRP
Rule # 4 = Ask for an Out-The-Door price around MSRP. (dealer needs to drop prices around 6 to 10 %).
    Rule # 5 = Offer $500 over invoice
Rule # 6 = There will be more trucks. Walk away.

Dealers lie about people paying mark up.

I think some people just don't do enough research, are in a hurry, and don't really care overall. They "want" something, but don't "need" it, so it turns into an impulse buy.

Oh, and I agree with all your rules OP.

I got lucky, dealer wouldn't budge and I knew I wanted a Tacoma badly, only offroad model left on the lot and next closest one was 900 miles away. Dealer won't get another for another month or so.

Talked them into giving me 3000 more for my trade in, of course it required me to walk away first because even so they wouldn't budge. I said forget it I'm going to Chevy, then they offer me the 3000 more for my trade.

Well, did paperwork to buy my truck and realize truck price was almost 3000 less! I didn't say a word lol, signed and brought my truck home.

2 weeks later dealer calls and said to check my VIN#, told them what it was and they said they may have allowed me to take the wrong truck home haha, I told them nope, it's the truck I wanted and test drove. Turns out the paperwork they did was for a much cheaper truck lol. I kept the lower price and my truck since it was their mistake, went in a few days later and corrected the VIN#. I'm a happy camper, got more for my trade in and 3000 off my truck :)

While I didn't pay over MSRP, I didn't pay a ton under it either. Dealers sell these trucks fast, and I wanted a unicorn. Fully loaded double cab, manual, off-road, (black or MGM)... I also didn't feel like waiting more than 2 months or traveling to the other side of the country.

That's very interesting. How much did you pay out the door then? I remember when I got my truck, the transaction was very long. I remember them checking the VIN# on the paperwork, from the keys, temporary registration and the truck itself every single step of the way until I drove it out of their lot. You are a happy camper indeed.

Todays buyers are payment buyers, ever notice that salesman always ask how much do you want to pay a month, buyers want to see a lower monthly payment not being concerned with how many years they will be paying. So paying msrp doesn't matter any more.

Because they are stupid and love giving their inheritance money away to the stealership only to find out later the steering wheel vibrates , hood vibrates, transmission shift problems, engine shuts down while driving, and countless other problems.

I won't pay crazy prices like some people will, but I'm not going to sit there for hours upon hours calling dealerships and going back and forth for days. My time is more valuable to me then their time. Saving a little bit more isn't worth my time since I can't exactly go to work to give myself more. I can however make more money every day. I don't plan to buy another vehicle for a long time. I'd rather not deal with the haggling and actually go out and enjoy myself while I still can. Oh and, what was the point of this post? If you don't want to pay the premium price that comes with a Toyota, then go buy something else. We won't care. Terrible first post in my opinion but welcome to TW anyway.

If the dealerships couldn't get the market adjustments, they wouldn't ask for it. There's always enough demand beginning of a new model to get more money. There are market adjustments on the new civics right now.

It's kinda like a rebate, if the manufacturer thought they could get more for the car, don't you think they would? Supply and demand

I'd also like to add a couple to your rules.

    7. Try to get other sales associates to compete for your business. (it's one of the few ways to gain leverage)
    8. Be ready to throw out the name of a competitor you might be interested in (optional, it may work or it may backfire)

I remember a while back I was shopping for a Tundra and it took about 2 weeks to finally make a deal, along with ordering it from the factory, because 4x4 models weren't usually shipped to Florida. And that was before the San Antonio factory opened its doors.

At the end of the day, there is always one question you must ask yourself, "Can I live with it?" after you make a deal.

Dog friendly, with dog snot on inside windows, with of course a/c! Mag 16 inch wheels from a Mazda.
Tend to agree with you, but after they take all the taxes, and S.S. out of my paycheck. Then you have to pay fees and taxes on that new truck. That hard earn dollar looks more like 50 cents than a dollar! I assume you're saving 15% for retirement or is that waste of time too?

Not sure how we got on the subject of retirement since we were talking about saving a little off of a truck. I don't buy vehicles every year or two like some people. This vehicle will be the only one I buy for the next 10 years hopefully. If I were to buy them every other year which would be a rather often transaction, like saving a portion of your check for retirement is often, then yes I would haggle more. But this is a transaction that occurs once every now and then. It's just not worth it to me to sit there and go back and forth with dealers for days, weeks, sometimes months according to some of you guys up here. That makes no sense to me. In the end you either want the truck or you don't. There is no point in spending a month going back and forth with a dealer to save a little bit of money. Spend that time with your loved ones instead. To answer your question, yes I do save a portion to the side. Stuff like that is auto deducted so why even bring that shit up and start something? A good portion of my check comes out for taxes, SS, vision, dental, health and AUTO insurance for both my wife and myself gets deducted out of my check every two weeks.
