From what I have read here (the facts, not the b.s) is that the area the mid sized Tacoma excels is combined fuel economy. The full size v8's get roughly the same mpg on the highway, but once you add a lot of in town driving the mpg suffers whereas the Tacoma seems to dip ever so slightly. Also winter fuel and temps put a big dip in fuel economy. That is a reason I believe I am seeing such variances in mpg here, that and a lot of Tacoma owners are running LT type tires, usually a size up from factory.

One of our work trucks, '13 5.0 4x4 f-150 lost a solid 2-2.5 mpg when switching to bfg at ko's
I know my personal ram 1500 4x4 loses 2-3 mpg in the winter alone.

Combine these two things and I think that's why you see some Tacoma owners getting 16-17 mpg while others see 20+ And some people posting have 2 wd tacos

More likely your math was never very good. Your old Chevy never saw 20 miles to the gallon in it's life. With the set up you describe if you got 10 miles to the gallon you were doing good.
Best post on the thread. Thanks.

If taco as are on the upper end of 14-19mpg specifically 18.5 why am I seeing 12? 600 miles on the clock. Hoping something changes. Thought I read somewhere that with 700 miles a lot of people saw more power and MPG.

I've got just over 1k on the clock, first tank avg was 20, rest have been 17.8 - 18.6, I regularly see 22 for trip average on interstate @ 70-75mph.

With all this talk about fuel mileage you would think we were comparing Prius vs Civic. The Tacoma is a truck with truck gearing, truck tires with truck aerodynamics and some here want Corolla like fuel mileage. Unbelievable.

Seeing 18/20/23.5 with my 4.0L 6spd Frontier. Performance is impressive too, I'm normally a Toyota guy but the Nissan VQ engines are really great.

My trip from Denver back to Boulder yesterday.

Hard to believe I'd get better with a V6 let alone V8. Boulder is up hill from Denver.

Horrible MPG's. I have about 1,000 miles and highest I got was 15.6. Average 10-15. Yes it's cold. Yes I drive in town. But 10-15 is rediculous. I will deal with it but would like it to be closer to what Toyota states.

DCLB Off Road - no mods that make a difference for MPG.

Your truck may indeed get EPA ratings, or even 20 mpg or better by driving 60 or under, but I'm telling you that my unmodified truck sure can't.

Same, but I have KO's...I only lost .5 mpg after new tires @ 1K. 7K on truck now and fuelly average is around 15.5. Something about the OR config...it loves fuel. ...beats wearing a skirt though!

I'm getting no less than 18mpg and nothing higher than 19mpg. Then again I drive aggressively but it's still getting better gas mileage than my old 2002 Tundra AC V8 with the same driving style. Bottom line, I'm happy :)

Mine is about the same. Maybe OR's just get crappy mileage.

If Toyota could find a way to slap the 4.6l V8 into the Tacoma after they upgrade the Tundra's engines the MPG would probably match the 3.5's MPG's. 330 torque in a 4400lb truck that could work real nicely.

750mi on mine. Started out getting about 14.5 - 15.5 average. It was like that until just recently, then the hunting transmission issues subsided and the mileage went up to around 18 - 19 average. I was getting a little concerned, but it seems the computerized transmission is finally starting to figure things out.

All the numbers look good (not including the tundra.

    22 from a V8 Chevy
    22 from a turbo v6 ford.

And Tacoma guys are lucky to get 22 with 50+ less hp and 100 less torque.

To bad they didn't have the 3.5 ecoboost,
5.0 coyote and a Hemi in there as well.
