D.C cops are crying that allowing guns into the hands of law abiding citizens will only increase violent crime. What I can't understand is why they haven't been able to control illegal guns WITH a ban.

I find it hard to believe that the District was a wild west town back in 1976 when they enacted these bans.

Just another way for the government to CONTROL you.

    Very nice danusa!

What I've never understood is the logic behind the argument for most gun laws--the guns being used on the streets and in crimes aren't legally purchased, so how on earth does taking away the right to legally bear arms help the crime situation in the first place? It just makes it impossible to defend oneself from those who aren't purchasing guns legally. Stupid, Stupid, Stupid idea. I fear for the amendment since polititians will do whatever the people with the loudest voice want. I've talked to the average person, many of them, who says "oooo guns are scary. They should be banned!" When I ask them why they feel this way, they usually have no concrete reasons beyond "people get killed." They do no research and know not of what that they speak, but they are throwing themselves behind the "Anti-gun" Side because they only know what they have heard. When confronted with someone who knows something about guns, they tend to look confused and start to repeat themselves alot. I get scared more because these are the kind of people that make up an awful lot of The U.S.A. I know I'm singing to the choir here anyway, but still....

Well, it must be ambiguous, if people can't agree with 100% certainty with the law 100% of the time. Have you read the 2nd amendment lately?

    It says:

A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

Well can you see how some people can interpret that to be that you can have arms as long as your part of a well regulated militia? I'm not saying I think that, but it is written in a way where people can interpret it that way.

I can see your point, but to question the second amendment, to me, is stupid. All this argument as to who can have a gun is beyond me. We, the people, have the right to bear arms. Period.

I did it again. Got tired of paying truck payments and gas and traded in for a 2015 Honda Accord Sport since I enjoyed my 2013 Sport so much.
The case was closer than I expected.

I really did think it would come out 6-3.

I picked up a gun nevertheless to celebrate :)

It's funny how people think the 2nd was for the National Guard (which did not exist until many years later) or how they think it's only allows the citizenry to have weapons from that time period, citing that the Founding Fathers did not think that we would have the kinds of weapons we do today.

I always reply with something along the lines of, "Well in that case the 1st Amendment would need to be replealed seeing as the Founding Fathers never imagined something like the printing presses of today or the Internet."

That is a good point. I don't think that our founding father's lacked foresight. I think they expected people act rationally, and use force to protect themselves and the ones they love. I don't think they expected people to go about showing force as intimidation within our borders (as some people do), and in the case that they do - those that protect and serve (police/military) and those that have chosen to protect themselves (those of us with weapons for protection) will keep such irrational behavior in check.

    ...just my opinion.

*fwiw* Back when the constitution was written, the weapons they had were just as "high tech" as the militaries weaponry. I see no reason that a civilian cant have the same rifle or sidearm that a soldier carries.
