I know I get $150 back if I bring it back to the salvage yard. I will probably just get a stand and use it to further learn about the engine. I had a lot of fun thus far...just frustrating at this point.

You could fix it and build a gocart or small crawler and put that engine in it :D

That was kind of the plan for a bit if I had found a sammy. Swap an engine into babyt and then put the old one in the sammy. It would be perfect for that tiny little thing.

I would just keep the motor for parts or get it fixed and sell it or sell it for parts.

No reason to just trash it.

At this point, wouldn't it be cheaper to have someone else just repair the engine? You don't have to mess around with screwing things up. You have a low mile engine. Just have a shop repair or replace the head.

My two cents for what it is worth.

I am going to talk to the machine shop about an engine rebuild. Just pull the truck up to there shop and let them do it right. Just depends on cost.

No harm in finding out, and it would be nice to have a commuter vehicle in the meantime.

One time I bought a BMW 3 series from a guy just like you. I saw him working on the car every evening in the parking lot for weeks. I offered to give him a hand, and he told me that it just died and wouldn't restart. No fuel. He'd replaced the fuel pump, injectors, etc etc. He told me he didn't need my help, and slammed the hood. A few days later I jokingly offered him $500 for the car, which was worth ten times that, and he said "for $500, I'll even pay the title transfer". We went straight to the DMV. 30 minutes later he sees me drive by in his car. I honk and wave, and he throws a total shit fit. Turns out that before it died on him, the wipers burnt a fuse. He just grabbed another one out of the fuse box without looking what it went to. There was enough fuel in the rails to almost get him home.

The moral of the story is that you have resources available here, and you could be driving your truck to lunch tomorrow if you wanted.

Agreed, I am not giving up on the truck and am happy to keep working on it. I just need to have a means of getting to work and back. If someone came by and said "hey, can you give me a hand?" I would offer them a beer and get to work.

I hear that, just giving you some motivation. We need pics of the '80! At least some details on it. The axle leak is a common problem on these old pigs. It's the inner axle seal that lets the diff oil leak into the birf, mixing with the grease and leaking past the wiper seals on the knuckle. It is not a fun job, but you can typically do it in a day by yourself. You can take the square plug out of the birf and shoot some grease in there to get you by, however every mile you drive will slowly eat the bearings and birf up, eventually causing a clicking sound when you turn. I did mine about a year ago and just replaced everything, including axles. It was around $1200 in parts and I used cheap trail gear axles. Since then, I've just been driving it. Even towed the four wheelers up in the mountains! (it was a slow trip up the grade though)

If I lived closer, I'd give you a hand. Rebuilding engines is fun stuff.

@username , ill add some grease to get me by. Its only going to be used to get me to work and back when the time comes. Otherwise ill bike. Once I figure out the best route to go with my truck ill start figuring out when I can get it done. I watched a video and it seemed easy enough.

Getting started Today. The gf is going to come help me shoot some grease into bruiser and most likely top off the oil (just guessing it eats some, I'd be surprised if it didn't).

I am going to order then axle seal kits pretty soon and just get the side thats leaking fixed for now. That might be closer to the first weekend of march since I am loaded with school work.

The tires need replacing and pretty sure I am going to back down from 35s to 33s. The truck handled the 35's fine on the way back to Laramie but they do rub. No work is going into the suspension so seems dumb to not go 33's
