    No,
The New/ old toy 8" is only open diff. Off road with locker and stick get new 8.7" . The 8.4" is gone and replaced with the early 8" before the 8.4" the 8.7" is all new and stronger and only available with stick shift or the off-road the locking differential. All other models contain the old 8 inch differential

Uh no the elocker in the Tacoma is an 8 inch diff. The 8.4 is standard for non-elocker trucks. There is no 8.7 diff that comes in any the rear of any Toyota. Toyota does not used the old style 8 inch design anymore other that the elocker which is based off the v6 version.

What differential was installed on the truck? I thought in the TRD Sport a rear diff was not an option?

I was standing in a big circle jerk (50+) with Toyota engineers at Moab last year when they gave specs and mentioned the diff size. Big round of applause and a lot of "finally" from everyone.

Half of all Tacoma owners get their trucks dirty, so special attention is focused on the 4WD hardware. The new transfer case is lighter and quicker shifting, co-developed with the team working on Toyota’s overseas 4WD workhorse -- the commercial-grade HiLux pickup. A beefy new 8.7-inch rear axle comes on TRD trucks, replacing the standard 8-inch axle, also shared with the HiLux. It includes a better-waterproofed and more durable electronic locking differential. And thanks in part to that new axle, the beefiest Tacomas can handle a 6,800-pound trailer (up 300 pounds) and haul a 1,620-pound payload (up 120 pounds).

The 2016 Tacoma will offer a choice of 8-inch or 8.75-inch rear differentials. The 8-inch diff is packed with 3.90 rear axle ratio, and the 8.75-inch holds a 4.30 rear-end.

Yes , that's what I'm saying . All the rears for 2016 are changed. Forget about the 8.4 and the second gen stuff you know. The 2016 is new.

I ordered a sport but am on the fence about the off road now because of the locking/beefier diff.

How much stronger are we talking here between the 8" and 8.75 inch diff?

Yep, had a dealership void my warranty on a Maxima when they saw me at the local drag strip. It happens.

Just to throw a little gas on this...

The 8.75 Bx22 differential is not a new size for Toyota, but is new to the rear solid axle application. The 8.75 was first used in the rear of the 90's twin turbo Supra, IRS, ONLY with the 6 speed manual transmission, and used a Torsen T1. A version is also used as the front differential on the 2nd gen Tundra/Sequoia and the 200 Series Land Cruiser, it's a reverse rotation high pinion w/ an open 2 pin diff unit. The last possible application, which I have not verified, is the Megacruiser and Toyota Dyna portal axle independent suspension... Those are elocking Torsens.

Doesn't the ecm log this type of stuff? I would think the ecm can log the rpms and whatnot.

Covered in stickers and chrome stick-ons for extra horse torques and foot powers. Icon sticker gets me tons of travel, dozens of milimeters.
They don't promote it: there's a disclaimer at the bottom.

OP you broke your truck (looks like you hit some kind of a hole at 38 and that probably crunched it) and got the dealer to cover it under warranty, sorry the dealer wasn't more thorough I suppose on evaluating it.
