depends on how you sleep. i'm a side sleeper and i find that my hip and shoulder tend to bottom out. i have a self inflating sleeping pad that i use on top of the foam mattress inside. one like this
    http://www.rei.com/product/897537/alps-mountaineering-lightweight-air-pad-regular
not sure on the roof rack. if you had a Runner I could answer that question - no. the end brackets on the cross bars are plastic....most important connection and they cheap out on it  I opted for thule bars

Thanks! Missed that earlier...I'll go back and edit my post

Yes, I used the standard hardware that CVT provides. Little tip....if you are using thule or yakima bars attach the bars to the tent and then throw everything on the roof at once. wish i would have done that the first time. when i took my tent off last fall i left the bars attached so installation this spring will be super easy. another tip....get a ratcheting wrench. there's not a lot of room between the roof and end of the bolts so a ratchet/socket isn't very useful. i ended up using a open ended wrench and it took forever and i busted my knuckles more that once.

the side rails on the 4runners are adequate to handle the weight of the tent but the crossbars are not. the ends are plastic, way to go toyota o_O. lots of fancy and expensive options for full roof rack replacements or you can go the "cheap" route like i did and get some thule crossbars. 5th gen Runners need crossroads 450 feet and 58" crossbars and you're good to go. cruise CL or visit REI next month when all thule products will be 20% off (dividend sale). with the thule bars i have about 1/2" clearance between the roof and ends of the bolts. i think i paid around $250 for everything (feet/locks on CL and bars at REI)

I hardly even notice the tent is up there. I think I had more issues with it on my truck than i do on the Runner. When driving the wind doesn't bother me at all unless its a huge crosswind gust. no noise whatsoever. tight corners at high speeds can be a little exciting but nothing terrible. wind in camp is less of an issue now - my tent did a venus flytrap move on me one trip when it was on my truck and the wind picked up the ladder end, the tent is much more stable now on the Runner. Less space for less air movement between the roof and tent base.

only "complaints" are that i now have to carry a step ladder with me in order to close everything up. short people problems. i can't get the cover on without it. and i can't fit in my garage's 7' door with the tent. other than that i love it.

@GSPRunner has a CVT on his Runner, maybe he can share some words of wisdom for the 4Runner owners as well.

 good to know! would have saved me (and my knuckles) a lot of trouble last year!

Can't believe this will be the 4th year with my tent! And still looks good as new....even after 100+ nights spent in it!

    It's on.

I don't want green but I'm contemplating the summit series seems like it's a little more heavy duty an possibly better for cold weather, which summer up north still get decently cold at nights
