Not sure if this is the right place to post this.. Here or audio forum.. But i have a 2016 Tacoma and did not get the JBL audio option cause i know i could do better, after market. But i am in the process of replacing my "stock" audio system and have to say the #'x#:;; speakers are a joke.. Come on I would expect crap like that from the "big 3" not toyota.. It is complete garbage .. If this is a reaccuring complaint and thread i am sorry..

I don't own a Tacoma yet, but what exactly was the problem with them? Were they crap audio sound quality/clarity wise? Cheap feeling and/or looking? I am thinking of getting the premium setup with the JBL speakers, this may steer me towards the decision, 100%

Fwiw I think the stock speakers in my second gen are just fine.

If you had gone Jbl you probably would feel ripped off for how much you paid for them.

Stock speakers non JBL are fine for what they are and what's driving them. Wouldn't matter if you replaced all the speakers with top of the line, it would sound nearly identical with the stock head unit and no LOC/Processor and amp. Even with the JBL stock speakers, they are sub par to aftermarket, but are fine with the system powering them.

Of all the trucks I've owned, I miss my '88 the most. It had two 4" speakers... that's it.
But it was rock solid with going wherever I took it, every time.

I now have the JBL package with my truck, and I'm satisfied with it... and I was also satisfied with my '06 SR5 stock system (which was loud enough for me to hear, but wouldn't win any awards)

People generally are attracted to Toyota's for their reliability (drive train wise) and accept the "simpler" interior options as a trade-off for the (well deserved) perceived overall value of having a vehicle that will last much longer than most any other manufacturer, given the same basic maintenance regimen.

I would argue that the big three would add nicer creature comforts (sound systems) to make up for their shortcomings in the overall reliability department.

In the end, I'll bet you are able to upgrade your audio system to your liking and achieve a sound you like for less than you would have paid a dealer for the JBL option as you and @big_jarv eluded to.

Tsinajinii you nailed it on the head .. All in all the sound wasnt to bad.. Not great to say the least and following up the jbl option for the the cost doesnt not offer much in quality. And i agree the big 3 offer a prettier package of crap, but can never match toyota reliability. My rant is to the crap they passed on.. Everything else in top notch over built.. Anyway i corrected the fault in my Tacoma and cant wait for the final results.. Cheers..

Jmb19. I would advise a upgrade if you can in the States on get the JBL upgrade on it own.. For Canada at the time i had to get the sunroof and blindside crap and JBL for a 2 grand price tag.. I read the JBL option is like 700$ or so down there.. Almost worth it if you dont ever plan a after market upgrade.. Good luck and enjoy your tacoma.. I am sure you love it.. As i love mine.. Other then the stereo..lol...

Yes you can as i did.. I like the factory head unit for the nav and steerimg wheel controls.. The are many options that allow you to use factory headunits.. From amplifiers that take speaker inputs to simple units that that speaker inputs and make them into rca outups.. To all on DSP units, but the car audio world has evolved to help and make getting good sound available while keeping the factory feel.. I was able to do a complete overhaul without cutting a single factory wire

The factory 6 speaker system in my SR sounds just fine to me. It actually has a lot more bass than my 2013 Escape w/8 spkrs or 2013 Accord w/6 spkrs. It'll get plenty loud enough for me but I haven't really been in to loud stereos for a few years. I guess I'm just getting old lol.

There are photos to be found but if you look at the quality of the speakers you will be amazed how something that is built that crapy can produce any quality sound whatsoever. I've seen larger magnets holding up my kids artwork on my fridge.

I didn't get the JBL upgrade either. It was just too much money for MY taste.
I think the stock system sounds great! But then again, maybe I'm just rationalizing the savings!!

non-JBL in my truck sounds as good if not better than some vehicles I've had with "Bose" or "Infiniti" systems.

Same situation ... just not worth extra money to go up to SR5 Sport + pkg (Canada).

... one thought comes to mind is the quality of sound going INTO the system - I usually used my ipod touch on my 2005 (had a factory ipod connector) - I recall once when the system disconnected from the ipod and played 1 of the 6 CDs that were in the unit (Radiohead btw...) The difference in sound quality from the CD vs same album off the ipod was shocking. I knew that the compression for ipods resulted in poorer sound quality ... but was still really surprised.

Audio quality is in the ear of the beholder. I'm definitely swapping mine out for a system more powerful and with better quality speakers. I like to listen to my music so loud my lungs and the rear view mirror vibrate. My lady friend gets in the truck and I have the volume way down and she says, "Your stereo sound great but can you turn it down, it hurts my ears". LOL

You must have never owned a Toyota before, they're not well know for their audio systems. All the ones I ever owned came with cheap ass paper cone speakers. Easy and pretty cheap upgrade.

I have the stock, non jbl speakers. Sound good to me. My ears must not be pretentious enough to tell the difference.
