your thoughts on the Best mower

Nice!! I would love to have a suspension on mine for those really bumpy lawns. My Walker is like a bull at the faster speeds on a bumpy lawn.

If I were your uncle I would be jealous to.

i would say craftsmen but there wasn't one for them so i would say john deere

 

I have a Toro self propelled. Bought it 15 years ago and it still works great. I change the oil twice a year and keep the moving parts lubed. I only have a small yard and I thought a self propelled was a waste but now that I am older I am glad I bought it.

 

1988 Ariens series 931, GT-18 Hydrostatic, Kohler Magnum M18S 2 cyl 4 stroke, 48" mowing deck, 48" snowblower, both shaft driven, hydraulic lift and steering, PTO's front and rear.
I dragged the tractor and deck out of an old barn a few weeks ago. Today, I picked up the snowblower from Craigslist. For a little over $500(mostly for the blower), and a whole lotta love, I'll have me one badazzed machine!

if your yard is hilly dont get a zero turn. They blow while trying to side hill mow. JD (not lowes are HD) FTW!! Or Husqvarna if you dont wanna pay for the JD $$$$ green paint

 

I hear you. My Walker blows on hills sideways. But it could back up a mountain. Mid size walk behinds are the BEST way to mow a hill safely imo. I agree JD's are great machines. My gs30 is pretty much flawless and it's a 90's model.

had a lawn boy. cut awesome but hated the goofy wheel placement. now i have a honda, no complaints.

 

Have a Cub cadet and the thing cuts very unevenly... Happens with mine and my grandparents mowers...

 

I like the John Deere x520 with posi and multi terrain tires, and for the trimming a Honda HRC215SXA two speed. If your wife/gf/kids might ever cut the lawn, stay away from the zero turn, though they are the most efficient. Been through a BX23 Kubota Compact with a 54" belly mower - has all the power you could ever want in a mower/backhoe/loader, just a little too heavy for regular lawn cutting. It would cut 18" grass to 4" without grunting. Been through a Scag hydo zero turn walk behind (52"?), very dissappointing. As a teenager, used a Wheelhorse - POS. The old Bolens before that was impressive, when I was 15 or so.

 

I'm surprised you had trouble with the Scag. Did you buy it used? What kind of problems did you have if you don't mind me asking?

 

I got it new with the 17hp Kawasaki engine. The blades would bog down and start slipping the belt when I got into heavy grass - up to two weeks worth. Broke a blade belt tensioning spring the first month I had it. It is advertsed as the "Ultimate SWZU", sure. The optional Honda 18hp wasn't available at the time. The hydro was pretty cool, but difficult to get tracking straight consistantly. The x520 will cut 18" grass no slipping/breaking parts, in a section I only cut a few times a season. They were almost identically priced, plus the wife cuts the grass every now and then with the JD, and it hauls firewood.

 

Thanks for the info. Just curious were you mulching or side discharging?

With my hydros I'm always inputting to go straight I think there are a lot of variable that can affect that such as softness of the ground bumps and things like that.

 

This was the HD floating deck, side discharge, with the plastic shroud removed. Yeah, it is a little rough here and there, with an occasional swampy patch if it's been real wet out. Been slowly working on the landscaping to make it more mower friendly. Originally got it because my brother has a fixed deck Scag, 14hp belt drive, which he really likes except when its gets wet - drive belts slip.

 

hmmm. I have no idea then why you were having so much trouble I guess it's more designed for maintenance than the real thick stuff idk.

I had the same problem as your brother with my belt drive deere gs30.

Thing does 15 mph and pulls wheelies like a bat outta hell. Have 60+ hrs on her and still haven't changed the oil . Not sure if that's bad or not?

 

Plus, as a landscaper, you sharpen your blades regularly. The blade spindles on the Hydro scag were the best I've seen on any mower yet. I had to replace the shaft in one the first time I took off the blades. It had one out of three bolts with a shoulder which bottomed into the threads. It stripped good coming out. They warrantied the bolt and the shaft, which took only minutes to replace.
